Count me in as one of those interested in one of the Hardware Station Brownstones, I love Brownstones. I really like the overall diversity in the design with Hardware Station, different heights, varying finishes and varying designs for each building, even when the buildings are actually connected.
Yes Bflat the large blocks can be a problem, but I think this development does a good job in breaking the block up, essentially into four, or three if you count only streets as breaking up the blocks. The nice thing about this, that Alta Gateway got wrong, is it won't create a giant wall along the street, because it will have breaks for E/W and N/S access.
Hardware Station, plus 400 West Apartments with direct access via 400 W and 490/500 W, plus Alta Gateway will have a huge positive impact on The Gateway, it will more than double The Gateway area population. Someone quoted 1,000 possible new residents just from Hardware Station. I think we all agree that The Gateway should focus on neighborhood retail (drug store, grocery store, coffee shop, etc) and Entertainment (bars, bowling, etc) and as was mentioned I too think that a drug store will be first, and while I think a grocery store is critical I don't think that will arrive until Station Center start to be occupied.
I've suggested in the past that The Gateway punch an access from the Olympic Plaza to 500 W., I think this is even more important now that 500 W will be continuing under the viaduct accessing Hardware Station and Front Runner platform.
I still think SLC is ready for a high end bowling alley, similar to Jupiter Bowl in Kimball Junction and I think The Gateway is a great location for that. This is my proposal for a cut through to 500 W, including a bowling alley and a grocery store, maybe in the short term use the western half the the area marked grocery and but the drug store in, facing 500 W.
I'm not as talented as many on here but here is my quick proposal.
