I completely agree. I was very worried when I first saw the design. It looked overscaled and too much like a crown, or worse, an upside down bottle cap (non screwcap of course). But as it went up, it just got better and better. For such a dominant building they needed to get it right, and they did. Kudos to their ability or luck.
Also, its equally as good on the inside. The open roof is a big bonus, but to me, its not the key to the success. Like the outside, the fineness of the elements, the complexity which pulls together (there is no chaos in it) gives a strong background texture. And most importantly of all, the lightness of it all, the height of the space, and the transluscent ring, together make for an open feeling space with strong connections to the outside. The old roof might have been fabric, but could as well have been the concrete of the old Kingdome.
