I was referring to lost profits for 1 or 2 years until they have a permanent solution, but I understand your points.

Gotcha. I agree: short-term lost profits would be reasonable to compensate for.

Most stunning part of Sept 28 City Council discussion was Administration's response to a Councillor's question about how long until the bridge removal... "days" was the response.

Days?! - with no City Council approval, and the closure only formally published (as required by law) on Sept 19th?

The Eastgate businesses' lawyer properly pointed out that this hardly passes the good-faith sniff test. Basically backed the businesses into a corner - "you want Vic Ave widened & the construction over, right? Well - if we don't remove the bridge, that's all going to take longer."

Riiiiiiiight... or the City could have planned this mess out better, and consulted properly months ago.

Luckily, a majority of Councillors weren't swayed by the not-so-veiled threat.

Can you provide specific examples/news stories?
I'm not saying saying they're trespassing only that many many places that have transferred title but ISC doesn't show much transfered South of the #1 between Regina and Emerald Park. I'm assuming there's an odd delay with ISC or something. But it's odd because so many other places have transferred that they haven't started work on yet.

The "days" response is not as sinister as you are making it out to be.

The contractor was hired to get rid of the bridge and as such the bridge was not protected during construction. Therefore the bridge is unsafe and must be removed.

Additionally the consultation has been ongoing for years. They should have done more recently, but the plan is old.

Ultimate the city is at fault for not getting ahead of the issue. And moreover, they never should have sold the interchange land in the first place.

In the end the service road is wholly incompatible with a widened Vic Ave. And I vote for a widened Vic over Eastgate connecting at Coleman.

These businesses just cost the taxpayers around $6-8 million extra.

Yeah I think there is a valid debate on whether or not to keep the bridge, but council/the city did not follow the rules in this situation and they will most likely pay for it. Rules are there for a reason, to make sure government (and businesses) follow the rules. Even if someone is trying to do the right thing but breaks the rules in the process to make it easier, they need to be punished for it. It's why we let murderers free if the police use false pretences to arrest them/get info, because if we allow it then, then we also condone abuse of power in all cases.

So it sounds like they could have saved the existing service road bridge, but now it is too late and they have pay for a new temporary bridge and then a permanent bridge. Wow.

By 'they have to pay" I mean we as taxpayers.

It's not bad. I still dislike the orientation of the parking on 13th Avenue and considering that the access to the parking is on Argyle, then why not just put the parking on that side anyway?

It all ends up making sense to maximize the natural light into the classrooms, but I don't like what ends up with 13th and the corner of 13th and Argyle with the entrance to the parking almost right at the corner will make that a bit awkward to navigate at day start and day end.

Parking at the north Superstore will be terrible when the other businesses open. It already had a small parking lot to begin with, and with even fewer parking spaces, it's going to be quite a squeeze. The east SS will fare much better than the north SS when things are finished there.

The parking lot is plenty big. People will just have to learn to park on the east side.

Yeah, and learn to walk greater distances as well.

There are 300 stalls on the east and they look very close.

That must be an old plan, because that's not the design being built right now.

The entrance on Stockton has been shifted further North, closer to Superstore and it angles through the parking lot, and there is another building being built right around the "293 stalls" wording.

I still think there will be lots of spaces, but fewer than are shown on that map.

Well it's looking out of date regardless. Unless they are going to demolish the building under construction and tear up all the parking lot work they've done to re-align to that site map.

Very pleased to see the reforestation of Hamilton St. continuing today. For you concrete lovers there are also brand new sidewalks on the whole west side and new sidewalks on the north end wrapped all the way around on 11th to the alley. This all includes real tree grates. They are also digging big holes and backfilling with topsoil.

Also some decent sized ash trees going in. Kudos to the City and Harvard on this.

Nice, really looking forward to this street being open again. Will look great in the summer when the trees are more alive too.
