I mean, just imagine a "hypothetical' society with gender biased laws based on cultural and religious vestiges that force a woman to keep her nipples covered at all times even in situations where men aren't required to. People of course would be in an uproar over this blatant oppression that has women subjected to outdated rules that treat parts of her body as a fetishized sexual object that must be hidden in public under fear of arrest. Once they were successful in having the laws repealed, everyone seems happy and most women no longer cover their nipples in situations in which men don't. But some people complain that certain women choose to keep their nipples covered! Obviously they're being oppressed and pressured by their families, religion, or male spouses to adhere to these archaic, anti-feminine traditions. So they decide to pass a law banning a woman's nipples from being covered in official situations in which men's nipples aren't.

So now, not only have they achieved the first victory is women's liberation, they've gone on to liberate women even further by disallowing them to cover their nipples even if they want to!
Is it societies right to step in when a battered woman continues to tell everyone her husband is really a great guy & it's her choice to stay with him? It's fascinating to me that some still defend this when the sole purpose of the Niqab has nothing to do with religion but everything to do with a husbands demand.

We are watching Global stations across Canada and laughing at the accents and expressions.

Reporter just said "face veils". So we are dying and have decided to try to make "face curtains" a thing.

Also FFS. It's not an issue. Let it go.

So, the Conservative candidate for Mississauga-Malton, who was turfed as a candidate yesterday for expressing views on homosexual conversion therapy that were not in keeping with Party views, is now claiming he is the victim of a bad translation (I guess he didn't read it). I smell a conspiracy.....

By the way, has anyone been able to make sense of the G&M and CBC reporting of recent days of the dealings between the CRA, the Conservatives, and KPMG that seem not to meet the "smell test"? I confess I found the coverage boring and don't really understand what it's supposed to be about.

SHH, just thinking about you. Has anybody out your way noticed yet that under the TPP, the government will give dairy and egg farmer (mostly in Ontario and Quebec) $4.3B over 15 years for giving up 3.5% of the domestic market. They will not have to prove actual losses to receive the money....

Perhaps if you guys could round up the fish and assorted crustaceans and drive them up the St Lawrence and into the Great Lakes.....

I suggest anyone who wants to continue the discussion is more than free to start a new thread about the issue but in this thread it has been beaten to death so please let's move on.
So now you're trying to dictate what election topic we should or should not discuss? How Liberal of you.

Polls say this is an important issue for a lot of people in this country, just listen to all the talk shows when this topic comes up. I remember when some Conservatives tried to silence then arts funding debate in '08, that was wrong because it's up to voters to decide what is important.

As much as you'd like this debate to go away it won't. This isn't a left/right issue, the fight against the oppression of woman & standing up for Canadian values is important to millions of people in this country.

I hope we aren't going to be plagued with stuff like this in the final days of the campaign. I find it very hard to credit that a Conservative candidate would advise a Nigerian law professor to "renounce his heritage". How does one "renounce a heritage"? Renouncing a second citizenship is the way to avoid the implication of C-24. I think the candidate is right to stick with a complete denial of the alleged comments, if he's confident there's no evidence of the actual content of the conversation. Things are getting out of control with candidate being forced to drop out of the race, imho. Of course, if the candidate is not being truthy, and it somehow is proved, he's just dug himself a big whole where a simple apology would have sufficed. Sigh.

Apparently if you are an NDP candidate you just have to say you're sorry!

Then why no support for the inquest into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women?

Why is abusing women so horrific when a Muslim man does it to his wife, but "not on the radar" when it's indigenous and white men doing it to indigenous women?

If fighting the oppression of women and standing up for Canadian values is so important, why his this government put so much effort into taking funding away from women's programmes?

That actually will offset (or even more than offset) any losses in Atlantic Canada. However, they are surely still out to lunch in the rest of Quebec, and I see only one CPC seat outside of that region.

Greater Montreal might just be coming back to the Liberals. The area is more multicultural, which is beneficial for them, and there is a strong anti-Harper sentiment. Finally, the "Trudeau" name is not a liability here like in the rest of Quebec. The exception is in the east end, where the Bloc and NDP should be the battleground as that area is far to the left on almost all issues.

In the rest of Quebec outside of the Greater Montreal and Quebec City regions, the key questions are how strong is the niqab issue, how do the votes split and how strong is the anti-Harper sentiment. The Bloc has the left-wing anti-niqab position. However, can they capitalize on that? The NDP would otherwise be the "default" option, since Trudeau is NOT popular here. I think the NDP should be okay here as long as they stay ahead of the Bloc. After that, the Bloc should swing seats away.

Strangely enough, now, Quebec and Ontario seem to be in very similar positions...

And this folks is why the Federal Government can never defund any program, department, institution, or single dollar bill from anything already approved. Because defunding something is exactly the same as endorsing the opposite. Defund a science department, you are anti scienece. Defund women's program, you are anti-women.

It couldn't possibly be the case that the Federal Government doesn't need to be throwing all this money around, nope, every single expenditure is important and can only go up, not down.

There are 3200+ unsolved homicides in Canada and 42000+ cases of missing persons. There is too many across the board. First Nations have responsibilities just like communities across Canada in making sure these things don't happen. It's not all the Federal Government's fault for every single problem with Canadian society and not every problem involves the Federal Government flailing tax revenues around trying to fix it from Ottawa.

Don't know if this has been posted on the forum yet. It's a good read.

It's not that unbelievable IMO, but yeah, I agree that we should take that one poll with a grain of salt.

With FPTP, it takes so little for a ton of ridings to instantly change hands...

BTW, I received my elector card in Bécancour so I might use the opportunity to vote for Mulroney's MP (even though, when we discussed voting, my gf (who is Anglo) expressed strong displeasure at the suggestion).

I won't dismiss it out of hand, but EKOS' polling in particular has been weird (and off all of the others) for the entire campaign almost. Even the head of EKOS said so himself and didn't know why.

In yesterday's JdM paper there was a bunch of articles on the TPP...

On the exact same page you had these two interviewed:

A Quebec Dairy Farmer: "This deal is a total shovel hit in the face for us"

A Quebec Cranberry Producer: "We couldn't possibly dream of anything better than this"

So... I think the only logical conclusion is that the government shouldn't be arbitrarily picking winners and losers.
