The Great Canadian Skyline Thread!

Well obviously two cities don't have to bear an overall resemblance for single random photos of them to share common elements. But I agree that limiting comparisons to those other cities is better as it avoid the pesky issue of skyline blasphemy which has been haunting the forum since time immemorial!

From the Hamilton Mountain, they do have similar traits. I don't think Andrew meant it as a direct comparison anyways.

As an ad hoc expert on both Hamilton and Montreal, I can positively confirm, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that Hamilton and Montreal don't look like each other in any way whatsoever. The architectural vernaculars are totally different.

The two cities are quite different in terms of culture and vibe at the street level but they look uncannily similar from their respective elevated backdrops/hill/mountain. Hamilton looks like a mini-Montreal. That being said, Montreal's skyline is modernizing so it may not look like Hamilton for much longer.

Agh some people just compare to piss others off ...wishful thinking that you can compare a city like Montreal to Hamilton lol ....but I get how the mountain view gives that effect but don't push it...

Toronto looks like a mini New York City ...I've noticed that when Montreal skyline photos are posted not many comment ...it's this hatred towards the city that will probably never end...is it jealousy? Is it being arrogant? Maybe ignorant ? I don't know but I don't care anymore ...I think every major Canadian city has their own greatness about them and each are unique regardless how big and how old they are. I SAID major Canadian city so you figure it out.

I've noticed that when street-level photos of Montreal are posted, people seem to spontaneously orgasm. I think that lack of interest in the skyline is probably as you said, that different cities have their own greatness. Vancouver's is amazingly large and dense for the population, Calgary's is amazingly large and imposing for the population, Toronto's is just large, dense, and imposing all around, while Montreal's... has character.

But the overall cityscape is amazingly large, solid, interesting and dense! So it's all good.

As someone who post on a very regular basis street-level pictures of Montreal, I have to say that they don't get much comment at all, except from you and Rousseau and a few others. I don,t mind it, though, because I'm sure people look at them and appreciate them nonetheless. But they don't get much comments. For exemple, I though personally that my last instagram set was one of the best ever, but it did not get one single comment. Once again, I don't mind (even if I do notice the apparent indifference), I'll keep posting for those who care :-)

Weird, I've always been shocked by the huge amount of praise whenever a Montreal photo is posted. I'd say they get more positive attention than any other city in this forum, and I personally wouldn't rank it any higher than fourth most impressive as a skyline (maybe first as an actual city).

Relax guys, no two cities on this board are as hated as Calgary and Toronto. It's not even close . That said, commenting on pics has more to do with the ratio of image frequency (of city) to unique new angles/buildings.

Don't quite know what you're reading, but most comments about MTL come from people of Montreal.... as for skyline/density I rank it 2nd not because this is where I am from. Photos can be deceiving but for someone who has traveled to major Canadian cities, that is my opinion. Some of these cities have boring skylines and what I mean by that is most buildings all look the same where as Montreal, it is mixed and has character....it seems like to most of you think having more towers built is what matters, well to me its the diversity, the architecture is what counts...HEY tall towers are sweet but when most buildings look alike, it gets quite boring. oh and density is a reallllll turn on for me so when I see that, I actually need 2 cigarettes after I am done looking at them @Nouvellecosse MY comment up there about each city having their own greatness and uniqueness I don't mean BY skyline... I'm talking about the city itself... festivals, activities, nightlife etc...

I do love your posts, Martin, even if I don't always make the effort to respond to them. I think a lot of people probably just enjoy the eye candy without making the effort to post and express their appreciation.

But yeah, that last set was fantastic!

I don't get why anyone would find comparing Montreal to Hamilton negative or hateful*. They're simply enough alike that it lets folks from Hamilton dream about what their city could be like if it followed Montreal as a role model. It's meant as a compliment.

*Apart from a select few who seem to have a serious loathing for Hamilton, but there's nothing that can be done on that front.

That's funny because I've always thought Vancouver received the most praise. I rank vancouver #3 (though its getting better) but it is the most photogenic thanks to its scenery.

It is very hard not to praise Vancouver. The setting is just peerless.

Vancouver definitely gets the most praise, but I think every top 4 city's skyline has it's own unique features (Edmonton is getting there too). Montreal does get some hate on the skyline part from certain members insecure about their own city's skyline, but I don't expect people to comment after every skyline pic I post, especially when the angle/view is ordinary. I myself only comment when I see a picture I really like.
