I'm very happy we're finally getting some housing right there. However, the design is pretty much the same as everything we've seen these last few years. Do you think we'll get anything remotely unique in the next few years?

I too am happy there is residential coming to that empty lot. I personally feel there should be more residential close to our civic center...it just makes sense.

But I believe they missed the mark on the design and height. With the Grand and Little America's so close by, I would hope they could have a set back height of 8 to 11 floors. 6 floors is better than 3 or 4...yes, but I really think having higher residential right across from the Grand would help integrate the building into our south skyline better.

Now I dont know the Zoning for the area...,so I could be way off. Its just my opinion and hope for this area of downtown that has allot of lack luster personality, for lack of a better term than...blight.

I certainly wouldn't go so far as to call this and similar projects "blight." I would call the razed, empty lots "blight," or the rotting buildings and parking lots we've got downtown thanks to the landbankers.

I agree more height really would suit the site better, but I think this is, overall, a good use of the land and it'll be good to get more housing in that area. Hopefully more residential will follow around it.

Is the ground floor retail space? It looks like it would be...

This is a big improvement over what was originally going to go there, that godawful DA's Office. This is a welcome change of pace from the City and County Government suburban style sprawl in that area. So help me if they tried to put motte of more greenspace around the DA's office too so we could be more like DayBreak Downtown.

So overall, while it isn't tall enough, it's taller than the DA's office was going to be (I'm pretty sure) and it's overall a better choice.

I wasn't referring to the project as blight. I was referring to the current state of the area. The open lots everywhere, the auto dealerships, the pawn shops, the cellular stores and more surface lots.

Looking forward for Tomorrow's CCH Announcement. Last week Fox13 quoted that county leaders will make an Announcement next Tuesday about the future of outdoor retailer show and the 1,000 room CCH.

While I don't expect it to be anything like the image I have above here. I am hopeful that tomorrow's announcement will FINALLY shed some light on long awaited details.
Where is the CCH going?
How many rooms?
How Tall? ( Feet and Floors )
What will it look like?
When is the groundbreaking?
When will it open?
Will Outdoor Retailers stay?

I'm hoping for a very detail announcement tomorrow. Anything less will be disappointing.

Disgusted by the legislature. Any hope of development in the Northwest Quadrant is pretty much dead for the foreseeable future. Any politician who had their hand in this should be voted out of office. It's remarkable how shitty the corrupt legislature has treated SLC over the years. It should be criminal.

A great big "no shit" from that. Nobody should act surprised that this is where they picked to drop this turd. Hope the esteemed Utah Senators enjoy reselling and developing their adjacent Draper lands while sticking a 50 year grave marker on any NW development.

West of the airport made the most sense for the New prison site. That area was already zoned for industrial use anyways where it was surrounded by warehouses. This is probably the best possible outcome since nobody has to worry about it being in anybody's "backyard". You don't have to build an infrastructure since it's right off of a major freeway I 80. Which is an easy route to get to and from downtown. Good move.

As far as the CCH announcement, I wouldn't get your hopes up for anything concrete, because, hey, these type of announcements rarely deliver.

This announcement won't have any of this information. It'll probably just be to say that the county will move forward with OMNI as the hotel developer.

With the CCH announcement, I don't have any news ahead of the news conference but I can say that there is a thought around the office that the announcement will be about the location and room count.

We also feel we know the chosen location but as we weren't part of the discussions, we can't say for certain. I can say that the location we feel it will be announced at is a location that hasn't publicly been stated. It would also be directly connected to the Convention Center.

Sadly, we will all have to wait to see if the location is chosen or not.

On the Prison Relocation, the reason that picking SLC is bad is that the location - West of 7200 West and North of I-80 - This was to be the location of the Northwest Quadrant central area. Basically the downtown for the area, the hub of commerce and the hub for the upto 60,000 people.

The prison going there will derail the years and years of planning that has gone on to develop the area.

I have told others that the economic impact in Draper from moving the prison is nothing close to the economic loss that SLC would feel if the prison is located there.

With Eagle Mountain, the savings could be put to adding a hospital to the prison or nearby and technology to allow video conferencing and court proceedings. This would lower the transportation costs, still close to employees and volunteers while also costing about the same as it would cost to build in SLC.

Still, rebuilding in Draper could be done for about $400 Million, just build a highrise prison (2 - 20 story towers) would cover it and would take up maybe 20 acres of the land. They could sell the rest and still get some benefit of the land.

I think it's important to mention that the prison site west of the airport does not have public or private utilities adjacent to the property. It will take millions and millions of dollars to extend utilities and a paved access to the site. How seriously was development ever considered west of the airport? That place is about as remote and isolated as one can get without leaving the valley. The noise of the airport nearby makes it one of the last places people would like to live, and although I guess industrial/warehouse development could have happened there, there's already a lot of that going on in more central areas of the valley.
And why would the urbanists here want 60,000 people west of the airport, rather than helping contribute to the densifying and urbanization of existing areas?
I ask in sincere curiosity - why is this not-unexpected prison move such a bad deal?

Well...say goodbye to there ever being a chance of having Boeing expand their jumbo jets at the SLC airport...say hello to higher property taxes for all SLC residents including big and small businesses....say hello to a massive amount of untaxable land revenue for the city.

This was a sad mistake and it just goes to show how greedy and corrupt our Utah legislature is.

So much for hearing the voice of the people...
