I may or may not agree with you, but when built in 1968 (?) the Guinness building was sort of a "Grade B" version of a building of the International Style. It has many of the overt features, and the dark stone shows good
material used, but everyone here seem to dislike spandrel, and there's loads of green-gray spandrel on this one. Plis, IMO, the overall 'look' just doesn't make it. Montreal, and of course New York, have several superb, classic International style buildings. But Guinnes IMO doesn't quite warrant being in that category.

(international style, even Ottawa.)

For instance, I think a 180-190m tower in place of the Guinness building would make for a fantastic stepped skyline effect. Both from Coal harbour in to the downtown, and from the Marine building up........
You can see what I mean from the second photo officedweller shared above

Yes, a "hidden gem" it will always be, and we can build higher around it without ever diminishing its grace and elegance.

Now, start conceptualising replacement of the Guinness tower for something taller. I still think the step-up effect would be fantastic if a Guinness replacement is designed as tastefully as the MNP was.

I'd love to see that too, but, whew, that's a
tall order requiring maximum savvy and finesse.
