I think MNP is one project that just everybody is keen on. So sleek, reflective, and elegantly curved. Perfect counterpoint to The Marine Building.
This time we totally "got it right." This is a benchmark for excellence in Vancouver.
Just too bad that there are several other projects out there that "just don't have the right stuff....."

Your photo is lovely and I thank you for it, but I must take exception to your comment about signage.

Why should the Shaw sign not have been approved? The tower is the regional headquarters for a major corporation and is located in the central business district (or at least very close to it -- the exact boundaries escape me at the moment). If residents in that area are bothered by lights, it does not make sense to be living there, especially if they knew about the lights prior to purchase. It seems like everyone wants it both ways: they want the excitement of living downtown, yet at the same time want to be surrounded by the darkness and silence of the suburbs. It doesn't make sense.

You may be right, but arguing for how people should feel doesn't change the fact of it. The formula is pretty simple: bigger signs = lower property values; lower property values = lower tax revenue. The question for the city is: is it worth it?

The highest price ever paid for any residential property in the history of the country is the penthouse of Fairmont Pacific Rim, directly adjacent to the Shaw sign, "the most ridiculously large sign down here":

Moreover, are you really advocating the city adopt policies that make buying real property even more expensive?

that's incorrect actually.
if you read the article, the $55 million price tag is for the penthouse and 3 sub-penthouses combined. the actual cost of the penthouse was $25million. still not the most expensive in canada.

that title belongs to the west penthouse at the four seasons in Toronto. sold for $28million
'the West Penthouse of the new Four Seasons Hotel and Private Residences Toronto is the most expensive condominium residence sold in Canadian history.'

EdinVan's point is valid. Shaw Tower and the sign were there first so they should not have been a surprise to anyone (I am assuming the sign went up and was lit the same time thr tower was built).

Maybe the city needs many more signs if they bring prices down, haha.

Honestly, people complaining about signs such as the one in the Shaw tower maybe should not choose to live in the downtown heart of a metro-region. Especially within or directly beside the CBD or an entertainment district...

There are brighter lights where I live in Japan, and its a city of only 100 000 people. Urban living people!

That is what I love best about Japan is the true urban mix use, people who own and work in bars / clubs / taverns are the ones living in the floors above said establishments, so they understand the nature of the district.

Yes, thanks for the clarification. The property directly adjacent to the Shaw sign represents the highest price ever paid for a condo in Vancouver history. The point remains exactly the same.

Well we're off topic, but to be clear, this building has two penthouses on floors 47-48, and three sub-penthouses on floor 46. I'm pretty sure the big purchase was for just one of the two penthouses and all three of the sub-penthouses.

Anyway on signage, my point is simply that most people don't like to live next to big bright signs and that is not going to change regardless of who was there first or whether they are being fair or practical. The city has an obligation to aesthetics and to preserve quality of life, otherwise why have any limits on signage at all. Witness Telus Garden screen controversy.

businesses who fill these commercial towers also have a right to display their logo no?

so you're telling me that your quality of life is diminished because of the shaw sign? seriously? and this is something you didn't take into consideration before moving in?
my bedroom faces directly into the Deloitte sign on Bentall. it's pretty bright but guess what, I have blinds. If the Fairmont doesn't have quality blackout blinds maybe go buy some and improve your quality of life. pretty simple solution.

Hmh, seems that I have forgot to post these three photos I took already in June. Should now cover all angles I can think of.

Okay, one more time everyone's favorite tower. The last photo must be the best photo from that angle I can take. Came out very nicely considering how tight streets around MNP Tower are without owning a tilt-shift lens.

Very nice! It looks like they got the missing fins put on. It's always good to see a building finally get to the point where it's about 100% done on the outside. Was the lobby finished?

welcome back

Thanks Metro! I love this building, and think it will stand the test of time and remain one of Vancouver's most distinguished buildings.

Thanks guys!

Yeah, I love the Trump, but actually this is the most beautiful addition I have seen so far to the city since I left. Just amazing curves and angles from all vantage points. Wish I had more time there to snap a few more pics. I like how it meets and contrasts with the heritage structure at the base, as shown in my third pic.

Nice pix!

Mcminsen, your first pic could be straight out of London -- steel and glass and Edwardian style side by side...
