I hate to rain on everyone's Solar City parade of downtown tower, but has no one actually looked at their website to see their other locations??

http://www.solarcity.com/company/contact

Their headquarters appears to be in a 3-5 story building in a general office park. I'd trim down the hopes until something is announced, otherwise disappointment may abound.

Additionally, Vivint Solar was already building a place at Thanksgiving Point, so I'm guessing that's likely the going to house the new regional hq.

My guess is that a lot of those 4,000 promised jobs are going to be sales and people installing/repairing equipment, i.e. people that aren't in the office very often.

On the Vivint building, they are adding roughly 3,000 people there. The SolarCity Regional HQ is slated to be built within Salt Lake City borders, so it is different than the Vivint building and employees.

Overall, Utah gave incentives to both Vivint Solar and Solar City for no less than 7,000 new employees.

Solar Cities employees are already stated to be office workers for the most part as opposed to call center and installation people.

Whether a tower is built for SolarCity or they build a lowrise campus, as long as it is along a transit line, I think we will all be happy.

Here's a list of jobs SolarCity is already recruiting for in SLC:

Sorry just saw over on the Utah Valley page that I had remembered incorrect. Vivint Solar and SolarCity are competitors as Vivint Solar was bought by SunEdison. So that's where I was getting things a bit turned around on. Sorry about that.

This was my thought as well. The only way the Beijing games could possibly be a bit of good news for SLC is if they reuse a lot of the old 2008 infrastructure, like the Bird's Nest stadium (that place is fantastic!). That would help establish a precedent for using existing, even old Olympic infrastructure, in new games.

Also, Solar City is great news for SLC! I wouldn't count on Solar City building it's own tower, probably ever, but they will chew through a lot of office space, making the need for more space (and therefore more towers) in downtown all the more likely.

Architizer has chosen our very own Borg Cube Courthouse as their Project of the Day.

I really enjoy their Instagram feed -- a nice assortment of project types (residential, commercial etc.) and styles. https://instagram.com/architizer/

Does anyone have any updates on the Convention Center Hotel and Omni?

This article from the Trib today offers little more than the following quote:

"The state and Salt Lake County have agreed to help fund a new pavilion and a $355 million, 1,000-room hotel near the convention center. The only bidder, Texas-based Omni Hotels & Resorts, was recently awarded the contract to develop the project, but questions remain before construction begins."

http://www.sltrib.com/home/2789841-155/as-record-breaking-outdoor-retailer-show-opens

I assume the questions mostly involve which land to acquire and how to acquire it? Also what does the new "pavilion" entail? This is the first time I've heard about a pavilion. Sounds cool.

A bit of bad news on the convention front in SLC... Adobe has moved its Adobe Summit (largest digital marketing conference of its kind) from SLC to Las Vegas next year. It brought in 5-8K digital marketers from all over the world for a week and ended with a ski day at a Park City resort.

I know lack of a centralized hotel was an issue, though ultimately, I think they just outgrew the Salt Palace CC as it was pretty packed (literally shoulder to shoulder at times) during the past couple of years...

Sounds like SLC needs a convention hotel more than ever. It's too bad it's not under construction now because at this rate it might not get announced for another year and might not even be done for another four years (that's if it even gets built at this point). By then Outdoor Retailers might be gone, just like the Adobe Summit has outgrown SLC. I Think with this there is an obvious need for more convention floor space as well. It's a shame that projects like this move extremely slow in SLC.

Eh...not too keen on the yellow.

Also, the renderings omit the 250 So. apartments, which are cool and pretty old - I hope they're remaining in the area?

The yellow is pretty much the only thing I like about that building.

Ahhh love it! Seeing 111 taking her (yeah, I gendered it)(like a damn starship)(or uh water...ship...) place in the skyline from these different angles is exciting.

Can't forget the AUC in the image too.

- Shrunk the photo too -

I have added (very roughly):

1 (Red) - 151 State
2 (Blue) - Regent Hotel
3 (Yellow) - AUC
4 (Lt Green) - APS Tower

I didn't include anything that didn't have a known address and would be visible from this angle.

Heights and sizes (widths) are estimates only and based on their locations from the image source.

While APS Tower is more fantasy than reality at this point, I still included it to just give an estimated impact.

From this angle though, AUC makes a large impact as it stretches the skyline further.

For filling gaps, 111 and Regent Hotel fill the gap along the 1st-2nd South blocks.

Once we get additional projects and locations, I can update them on the image if wanted or someone with better skills could include the renderings on the image.
