I really love the soft lines and curves of Roger's Place. It makes Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver's arena look like arena 101. This also seems far more of a community and a more pedestrian friendly design than any of the other big 3 cities which are nothing more than bland arenas surrounded by condos with no particular central design and little integration with the immediate community.
In Montreal they are going to make the area a lot friendlier. There is a public plaza on the East side of the Bell Centre and they're going to make Avenue des Canadiens pedestrian-only during game days. Not close to Edmonton's ICE District but at least there are some improvements underway.

Street level will be the best of any rink in the NHL, which is not saying a lot, but just wait

I am still not a fan of the winter garden, but it will be a neat addition and serve as a port cochere for the new Marriott.

Practice area, er you mean our new downtown community rinkIt will serve MacEwan University, Oil Kings, Oilers practice times, but also will be a regular community rink for minor hockey and other community uses such as skate times and learn to skate. We have been working with the City to determine programming for surrounding communities already.

Which ain't a bad thing...

I found out one of our Calgary forumers was part of a focus group that determined the name for the 'Ice District'. I guess it was that or 'Area 54'. He had a brilliant idea for a name that was never used though 'Centre Ice'. I guess in the end 'Ice District' is still better than 'The Mullet District'.

Weird that they'd debate naming the area after Chris Vande Velde, when they had players like Gretzky, Mess or even McDavid at their disposal.

To be honest yes, I assumed that most of the people were at stampede hence why it was empty.

But i'm comparing it with Vancouver and I've been downtown almost every day since I got here. I found that theres a real lack of independent restaurants and bars downtown.

I honestly assumed I was just looking in the wrong area

(The belt line looks more of the night life kind of area, like wise so does inglewood)

Many Vancouverites will be accidentally buying tickets in Edmonton and vice versa.
Scotiabank had a couple as well, I think Ottawa had Scotiabank place at the same time we had the Scotiabank Saddledome.

You've answered your own question. You were indeed looking in the wrong area. Calgary's main nightlife and hip shopping districts are concentrated in the Beltline.

That tower will be Edmonton's second or third tallest.

Aren't there a few proposals in the ~20 floor range in that area?

There is, but they are pretty much directly behind the 'sky' towers on the left. I also couldn't find any renders from that side for them haha
