Yeah, I agree ^^

I think Calgarians have grown up a little bit in the past decade and McMahon just isn't cutting it as far as being able to compete for the same entertainment dollars given it's current amenities.

A brand new indoor stadium (as rumored) can likely sway a lot of those fans back.

Nope. The east side of Regina's Taylor Field/Mosaic Stadium was the very worst of them all!!! (It was completed in 1947.)

I have always been embarrassed for Regina, the province, the Riders and especially, . . the fans . . about that. There are no words in the English language that aptly describe its ghastly condition for the past 25-some-odd years.

It's terrible, but I've never been embarrassed about it. Worried about certain aspects of it though, definitely.

I think embarrassed is the correct word. Only 1.8 more seasons. Only 1.8 more seasons. Only 1.8 more seasons.

The West side really isn't that much better.

It comes down to the fact that other G8 nations have strong/large national leagues.

It's also part of our mentality here in Canada. Regina is building a new CFL stadium with exactly the same capacity as the old one(while there is demand for more).

THF is also a slight downsize in terms of total capacity over Ivor Wynne. Only IGF is an exception and even then it's only 3000 more seats.

At the end of the day, we shouldn't be afraid to build bigger stadiums. Back in the 1970's when leagues were making most of their revenues off tickets sales, the CFL was almost on par with the NFL because there were new massive stadiums being used (Commonwealth and Olympic). Having bigger capacity can only help the CFL grow.

EDIT: Not implying we should be building 50,000 stadiums all over the place for the sake of building them. We should however build newer AND bigger stadiums if the demand is there. I think 40k would have been ideal for new Mosaic for example.

But you're forgetting that back in the 70's people didn't have the luxury of enjoying ALL games at home on their giant LCD TVs. And while its true that Montreal and Edmonton were able to fill those stadiums, it didn't last that long and by the 80's the Als were dead and Edmonton's attendance went down gradually, even as they expanded Commonwealth from its original 42,000 to a whopping 60,000.

The CFL is way down on the list of league ranking as far as revenue generated goes, so I think we're pretty lucky that we have these new stadiums coming online. Hockey is our sport, not soccer. Our cast off NHL rinks (like the old Pacific Coliseum) would probably be kick ass hockey venues in a lot of European countries.

I will concede that the older buildings like Winnipeg Arena weren't always perfect, but more often than not it was the expanded parts (like the upper decks) that were substandard, not the original parts. Certainly the buildings from the mid 60s to late 80s are in great shape... a place like Rexall leaves little to be desired in my view, it's really just an issue of not having enough revenue generating facilities. This matters to ownership, but no so much to fans, particularly those who aren't there on expense accounts.

New arenas are a bit too flashy and mall-like for my tastes. The old places were 100% focused on the game.
That's exactly what I mean though what revenue generating "mechanisms" does the new buildings of today (console, barclays, videotron) have that the bell centre and honda center lack? At what point does the the NHL (bettman) look at the SAP center and give it the same speech he gave rexall "No NHL team will play hockey in this building much longer"

To me I just don't see a huge difference from these 90's venues to the post 2010 venues. The bones of the buildings can stay around for 100 years and be in the same condition they were the day they were installed so does that mean once MSG gets replaced in 9 years we wont see another building in the NHL for 50+ years? The CTC is fine that whole "this place wasn't built to last 50 years" speech was bull! That is one of the leagues nicest building and to call it outdated as it approaches it's 20th birthday is just ridiculous. Posturing from the sens ownership, this isn't Atlanta. One could argue that rexall could house the Oilers perfectly fine for another 40 years.

Speaking of Rexall I can tell you that place looks amazing. The place is spotless. Like the MTS Centre, Edmonton has done a great job on keeping up with the building, The concrete walls in the bowl just makes it feel really old but I love that place I'm definetly gonna catch an oilers game when the jets are in town just to say goodbye to the ol girl (just in case). Ive been to all 3 California based teams and I can tell you they dont have the same mentality although sanjose's wasn't THAT bad. The worst by far was Nassau OMG was that a terrible rink in every way possible. Every bathroom you passes you swore you were gonna puke.

if this were true than why isnt commonwealth full? BC place? Rogers centre? Riders aren't even selling the seats they have at Mosaic right now.One of the entire end zone was practically empty on their home opener . They sure as hell didn't sell out the grey cup configuration out when it was available for regular season.

The trend in almost all sports is slimming down seating on existing buildings or building smaller than previous. It's just the way it's going. The CFL is a gate driven league so its extremely unfortunate for us but MLB,NFL,NBA,NHL all don't rely so heavily on ticket sales.

Again back to my post a few days ago. You older guys are stuck in the 70's "back in my day" mentality. It's a different world. All these stadiums being built are expandable if needed so don't worry.

For once we agree on something, except your last paragraph, I believe the OP is a young guy and instead of TFC he is an Impact supporter, am I right Nicko?

We're also the smallest (population-wise) of the G8 (or G7 now, if you will) nations.

Seriously? The whole world is downsizing. This isnt a canada phenomenon. Italy the united states etc.

And larger stadiums isnt why the cfl cant compete with the nfl. Its the tv revenue that set the two apart.

Lower capacity and more luxury seating is the way to go. You can create ticket scarcity and increase ticket prices. The ticats are profitable at 24,000 thf but werent at 30,000 seat ivor wynne.

And ya compare our stadiums to g8 countries. How about we compare our population, healthcare, social services and quality of life to them as well. Thats where our money goes and rightfully so. Not stadiums.
