A nearly forgotten part of Edmonton's history has delayed a condo project in the city's core.

The lot on the corner of 95th Street and Jasper Avenue is scheduled to be the site of Corners Tower, a 28-storey development by Edmonton-based BCM Homes.

Right now, it's little more than a hole in the ground. The project has been delayed due to fears that there might be one — perhaps two — abandoned coal mines under the site...

Damaged fences, flooded basements, homes shaken so hard tiles crack and drywall fractures.

One city councillor says damage complaints from infill construction are escalating and city staff say there’s little they can do.

“For me, that’s not a good enough answer,” said Coun. Ben Henderson, who’s been pushing administration for a better solution. “I think it’s a big problem.”...

Um... and while I know not amazing records were kept and all, but before you begin a project such as this would your geotechnical report not maybe inform you about this in part or full and so you take steps to investigate prior to digging a giant hole?

Was this vacant lot city land? Shouldn't the city make sure before making representations about the size of building one can build, prior to land sale?

On a different bit, doesn't look like the CRL contemplated the coal mines at all.

About ten years ago an excavator that was digging a new hole for an infill foundation fell through into an old mine shaft in McCauley

So while that info may be available, how accurate it is is likely questionable, esp. Seeing as most of those mines are all sealed up now

Yeah, I can't think of another city building a combination of white stucco with curtainwall glass and zany floor plates and step backs. On the other hand, a 50/50 spandrel/vision window wall is commonplace everywhere. Maybe I get around more.

how can you say that? these babies have little hats and everything...

i'd even wager that the far sides have some flourescent projecting boxes and some random staggered non vertical offset glazing mullions.

Great news on the new signals...way over due. We were at Earls Sat on patio and saw that gong show of an Intersection in action. Dangerous for anyone let alone someone older who has to use a cane or walker.

I'd say Jasper & 113 is worse, with all the restaurants and shops within the block, plus a busy Basilica. A typical Sunday afternoon after mass lets out or during a wedding can be a shit show.
