It's a diverse group. Easy to pick on the few in the spotlight.

UDI does a lot more stuff people don't like. Like sprawl in general.

It seems that whenever a group wants to talk about improving infill in Edmonton, the unspoken agenda always seems to be "how can we cram more cheaply built housing into smaller spaces without worrying about zoning or overlays, less regulation, and without having to care about what the neighbours think?"

Seriously. I'm not anti-infill by any stretch, but virtually all of my attempts to discuss improving infill design, ensuring zoning and overlays and being adhered to, ensuring neighbourhoods are respected, and reducing disruptions to neighbouring properties, interest in the conversation seems to die out very quickly.

^^Lol, don't know what your beef is with them specifically, but whatever. Why not pick on UDI?

^The conversation needs to be around what is good urban planning best practices. Most consultation discussions are purely based on what don't the neighbours want. I'm all for working within the existing zoning though, if possible.

You have a beef with UDI, not me

I have a beef with a developer who makes a bunch of promises and fails to deliver... Miserably..then starts an industry lobby group to try and tell everyone else how they should do infill

And of course what Dan Engelman did was just pure stupidity. These aren't the folks that council and admin. Should be looking to for advise on responsible infill

Luckily, thanks to Engelman's stunt, it looks like council will be tightening things up considerably within SD.

So really I guess IDEA is worth something after all lol

Ya, what Dan proposed as not a great idea, I agree. But to poo-poo a whole organization trying to improve the level of discourse around infill just because of one person? It is what you make it, I agree the optic are not great. There are some great people involved with the group and I enjoyed the infill tour last fall.

Keep in mind that the DO APPROVED IT (Dan's case) and it was clearly in the grey period of new implementation where Sustainable Development, developers, community leagues and the public had little absolute clarity.

The other development got FU$#^@ by a few things, intentions are there, but not everything goes as you plan...

Either way, IDEA has a great group of diverse people excited and involved with good quality infill projects. It is also continuing the conversation and ensuring a balanced voice is at the table.
