Here's some new concept renderings of Hamilton's new downtown high school and recreation centre to be built across the street from Tim Hortons Field:
- Yellow is the new high school
- Green is the new recreation centre
- Blue is Jimmy Thompson Memorial Pool, the last remaining venue from the very first British Empire Games (now known as the Commonwealth Games) that were held in Hamilton in 1930. The pool will be incorporated into the new recreation centre.
I'm not sure I'm crazy about the layout for this plan. Right now when you see the area south of THF, it already looks like a flattened-out wasteland, and this is going to spread that feeling south of Cannon Street. I wish there were some buildings along that route... THF is located in a dense urban environment, but you'd never know it to watch games there on TV. It looks like it might as well be a suburban office park.
I'm having a hard time criticizing this project despite its lackluster visual appeal. I mean, 170m...times two. That's huge for Montreal. That's like two 250m towers for Toronto.
But yeah, hopefully the new design will improve.

Nice to see the two towers going from 120m. to 170m. but the new design is atrocious. It would be more suitable for a suburb. Let's hope they improve it.
I just wish the Windsor station office tower had been 170m and these had stayed 120m. The thing I enjoy about Montreal skyline the most is that it's dominated by a smaller number of high-quality landmark buildings rather than being a jumble of more generic elements. With the exception of Calgary, it seems like every city across the country is having its highest quality landmark office buildings eclipsed in size and prominence by lower quality residential.

if you count all ongoing constructions in Montreal, from residential projects + office buildings, commercial projects, to infrastructures, this is the biggest construction boom of the last 50 years.
I could easily see Hamilton's skyline line doubling over the next 15 years. It's core is becoming trendy again and it's vastly undervalued for all that it has to offer. I was there this weekend and each time I go I love it more and more. I wish Hamilton would build more loft spaces. A nice one on James Street North and I'm in.

Hamilton (like Ottawa) has a very decentralised skyline. Winnipeg isn't as centralised as other prairie cities, but it still beats out Hamilton by a lot. If all of Hamilton's highrises were as clumped as Winnipeg's it would probably look similar in scale (though a lot more residential and a little bit shorter on average).
