Some on the website seem to be taking things personally. Sorry that this has riled your feathers. Maybe the truth has hit too close to home. From someone who grew up in a large metro; Chicago area. I can tell you it has been rough out here. The beauty is amazing. As I said before, Utah has a lot to offer, but many people here have been a disappointment.

No, not all white people look alike. But many here in Utah tend to, they are also quite odd. Not to worry, I will be out of here just prior to retirement.

Yes, I have had issues with the natives here. It sounds like I may have some from this website. That is unfortunate.

This is my last post on the subject. No need to get all worked up about it. It is what it is.

Utahns do look alike. But Utah isn't much diverse in terms of ancestry like you get in other regions of the country. Most Utahns trace their ancestry back to the United Kingdom - either Scotland, Wales or England. Even the Irish make up a very small percentage of Utah's ancestry (6.2% claim Irish ancestry). Total, 34% of Utahns claim their ancestry as being from the UK. The next closest is German (11%) and 11.8% Scandinavian. We also have a very small ethnic white population (Irish, Polish, Italian, Greek) and that plays a role.

Does it mean incest? No. Of course not. Utahns probably do share a common ancestor than most states but that's to be expected - much of the population traces its roots to a handful of pioneers.

I think that demographic conversations have their place on this page, especially during lulls in news like we have now. But some of the crap being foisted out in the last few pages is, to quote Woody Allen, the zenith of mongoloid reasoning. The arguments are lazy, sophomoric and boring. Utahn's all look the same? Mormons talk funny? Are you thirteen years old?

Look, we have a rapidly changing makeup in this state. Our Hispanic population increases by almost 8% per year. There are now more Hispanic people (+/- 400k) in Utah than the entire population of Davis county. Twice as large as the population of Salt Lake City. If you break it down further, via the trib, West Valley City is 45 percent minority (33 percent Latino); South Salt Lake is 42.1 percent (29 percent Latino); Kearns is 40.4 percent (33 percent Latino); and Ogden is 35.3 percent (30 percent Latino).

So I'll leave you lousy punks with a picture of a bunch more Utahns who look the same that I was hanging with earlier. My friend took this. I think it's a pretty cool picture of some of our towers too.

I am not personally offended, I am just sick of people making lazy generalizations.

Also, I am not a so called "native."

I happen to be from just outside of Sacramento, where Caucasians look pretty much the same as they do in the Salt Lake Area. Furthermore, people from one area generally talk different than people of another city. Sacramento has just as many "weird and funny" colloquialisms as Utahan's, who are unfortunately always generalized as being mormon, which in fact only make up about half the population.

Marvland makes a good point. Many people have not acknowledged the fact the whites may very well, and probably will become the minority in the coming decades. I am not saying that this is a problem in any way, and I welcome the change in demographics (Yes I acknowledge that we need a little color here), It is just interesting to see these shifts in demographics throughout history. Historically the West has had little minorities, being mostly white, while the East maintained a substantial black population. What this country will look like in 50 years, with a stagnated white population, shrinking black, and growing asian and hispanic, excites me.

Also, Ironweed, I am curious as to why your opinion is the "truth" and your life experience proves that this situation "is what it is", with no room for argument. Please elaborate. Or don't. Your choice.

RE: the Mormons and inbreeding and looking alike thing; as a history teacher and (Scottish/Danish/Inbred) Mormon, I'm actually loving this discussion. Even though it's out of place in this forum. Today's Radio West on KUER is with my favorite history professor from the U, Paul Reeve, talking about his book Religion of a Different Color -- basically how Mormons were constructed as being racially different (and inferior to) from other Americans in the 19th Century. Some of the posts on this page would serve him well if he ever wrote a sequel.

One of his major arguments is that the Mormons fought so hard to become "regular" Americans they actually overshot the mark, resulting in things like the priesthood bans and other racist policies that were eventually overturned, but again, lagging behind the rest of the country's own overturning of racist policies. It really is a fascinating subject, if you're actually interested in it, and not just finding things to bitch about about Utah. Anyway. It's funny to see all you Mormons and Utahns get bent and offended over something that is observed and opinionated from people outside of Utah. If you were to look at the point from a non Utahn point of view, you would see that Utah really is a weird place with weird laws, weird people, inbred looking people, and little diversity and culture. It is what it is. Hey at least Utah has some awesome outdoor adventures. Utah has that going for them. I agree with Ironweed when he says truth hurts.

It's been a while for me... I haven't felt I could add any substance. I think my last comment was a bit snarky (if not honest) so I stepped away. Anyhow, I grew up in SLC. I was raised, sort of, Mormon, but I don't claim the religion. I do, however, claim my heritage -Scotch-Irish with a dose of African ancestry (our hair really kicks ass) and some heavy pioneer stock on one side. I've lived in a number of regions. I currently live in the SEA-PDX corrider.

White people in SLC look like white people in other parts of the US. Though there is a lot of blood from the British Isles for sure. The only distinction I can make, and this is just anecdotal, is when I see a big family of handsome, "well-groomed" blond individuals I begin to wonder if they are from Utah. Does Utah have a powerful dialect? Hell yes. But vernacular is found everywhere! And in many cases, other regions have a much more distinct dialect. I do believe that multiple generation Mormonism is about as close to being an ethnicity, without actually being a true ethnicity, as you can get. So maybe that is what outsiders are sensing. But I don't find Utahns particularly odd or different in appearance from the rest of the country...

So slot me into the passive-aggressive peace making jerk category, k?

If Utah people look alike, it's not because of a small gene pool, or "in-breeding". It's a cultural thing. Utahns have their own very distinct trends in grooming and fashion, or lack thereof in the case of fashion. Even Mormons joke about it amongst themselves. Blonde hair, spaghetti strap tank-tops over t-shirts, crocks, etc. The homogenous look is deliberate and culturally based.

I feel as though I've been sheltered from a lot of the "Totally Utah" stuff. In this state, I've been attending a film school of roughly 300 students and staff. It is the most liberal and diverse school in the entire state. The fashion, culture, and interests of the people more resemble what you'd see at comic con than a Utah suburb. Those are the only people I can really socialize with on a daily basis..

If anyone here is bothered by folk of the LDS and stereotypical Utah culture, here's a crazy idea.... surround yourself with people who you actually like being around.

If someone tends to annoy me, I just won't hang around them. It's simple y'all.
