Here's a similar prewar angle on that area.

You'll note that at both Fort Calgary and the area south of the tracks were used as railway storage. The area for Fort Calgary was recovered in the '70s.

Thanks, Boris. The area south of the tracks looks like railway yards/shops... that is clearly a CPR roundhouse in the vintage photo.

I couldn't find an obvious answer for the land to the south, just across the tracks, though... is that old railway land, or what?
That's Victoria Park (now part of the Beltline). It used to have prewar homes but it became an area of flop houses in the 80's and 90's due to speculation that the Stampede would eventually develop it. Everything was demolished in the early 2000's to make way for said supposed development and here it lies today, parking lots.

I remember when Vic Park was incredibly sketchy, but the parking lot version is just depressing. Calgary's own Little Houston!

Lovely colour in that T.O. shot... And thanks to Prat for the YYC shots before that. The photo of Edmonton in the same series is also sweet, everything nice and green.

Excellent lens choice and and excellent photos. With 1.4x extender that lens is even better. I have the f/4L version, but just because I wanted a lighter version. It's the sharpest lens I know, even with the extender!

The crane and the small core are two giveaways telling that its Tour Deloitte. (the shot was taken in the end of summer/early fall last year)

I might be a nerd.

If this picture was recent it would be impossible not to see Deloitte from that angle. So yes this is an old pic from last summer.

I think this is the first time I see a shot from the top of La tour des convoyeurs, great angle and layers from there!

Who owns all that Stampede ground land? Why haven't there been any plans to build something like the East Village there?

And if there has been a proposal, was it decent?

As a Vancouverite, it's hard for me to imagine a tract of land of that size, that close to downtown on a transit line being empty, but it's probably empty for a reason.

Come to think of it, we still have a few of our own, but they all have enormous proposals (hospitals or masterplanned neighbourhoods) slated for them.

I would say that it's beside a freight line is the reason it hasn't been developed with residential. it's a little removed for commercial office. Type of Investors that are buying units a few metres away from the road deck of the Gardiner have only recently taken an interest in Calgary.
