While I do also like the architecture better along the north shore, it doesn't particularly stand out in that last photo because of the shadowing. I just feel like the mountains often district from and minimize the skyline. In that shot, the skyline really just gets to stand out on its own.

Yeah, that photo has a good silhouette going on. For me best photos from that angle are taken around dusk, emphasizing the silhouette nature with a few city lights starting to come though.

Vancouver looks best at dawn / dusk, Toronto looks best at night (by far the best collection of skyline lighting features in the country), and Montreal on a summer afternoon. (For me at least).

Ice has turned out amazing. It would look good in almost any skyline.

I'm not satisfied with the Toronto skyline, could definitely use a few thousand more towers to increase the density along those lakefront views. Entertainment District/Don River East construction should help along with a few mega projects on Front/Southcore.

I like both, but it appears taller (surprise, surprise) without 1300 meter mountains in the background.

Just curious, what lens did you use for the first photo? A long tele-zoom makes the Rockies appear to be so much closer to the city than they really are. Nice photos, as always.

I was wondering the same thing, so I Google mapped it... turns out the green patch is Fort Calgary which I have never heard of despite having been to downtown Calgary many times, and having been to the zoo nearby a couple of times as well. The barren-looking blocks immediately west of there is the East Village, which is awaiting development.

I couldn't find an obvious answer for the land to the south, just across the tracks, though... is that old railway land, or what?

All cities in Canada, even the biggest ones, have vacant land near their CBDs, but this seems like a very large area. (For non-parkland anyway.)

Unfortunately the prairie cities have swaths of vacant land like that near their CBDs... there is a particular photo of downtown Winnipeg taken from the NW where you see that kind of thing along Notre Dame. The skyline looks nice from there but definitely not the most flattering angle of the ground... this appears to be Calgary's equivalent of that angle.

Ottawa has a large area just to the west of downtown called LeBreton Flats. It actually used to be a neihbourhood with thousands of people but it was cleared as part of a 60s urban renewal plan, and sat empty for about 50 years. They are only starting to rebuild there now.

I became familiar with it while walking to the War Museum. It looks exactly like what one would expect such a 60s renewal project to look like. The bad old days...sigh.

The East village is immediately adjacent to downtown is currently undergoing massive development. The land to the south of it is partially developable land and partially the Stampede Grounds. THe dirt lot just on the other side of the tracks is currently slotted for a development called railtown, though I haven't heard anything about it in some time. There will also be an HSR station there at some point in the distant future. The lot just south of this is for a Brad Lamb development called the Orchard.

A reasonable guess would be that it's owned by the CPR who doesn't really need to do anything with it and can afford to keep it like that...?

The developer is Remington Development Corp. I believe.
