Dude, if there's one constant on this forum (and Canada in general) is that you all love to dump on Toronto. Everything is awful in Toronto.

And that's fine.. As a Torontonian I know that what we've got going on counters the haters.

It would be helpful if after someone posts an outrageous claim about the masses east of the Rockies all pining to move to BC, if a whole bunch of BCers didn't continue to insist that the outrageous claim is in fact the truth, and also not resort to splitting hairs in order to avoid admitting the contrary.

Counter reaction? Take a pill man. The only person that could be considered as slinging any mud here is Klazu continued ignorance on development patterns in Toronto for the past 40 years.

As far as I could tell was that the conversation started with someone claiming that BC is the most desirable place in Canada to retire due to climate and environment. How is this wrong?

There is a reason why the average age in BC is relatively older than most (all?) provinces.

Then from there it stemmed into an argument involving Florida and other such places and became super bizarre.

I have said my piece, and wont comment any more on this annoying subject. Looking at nearly any post made by rousseau about BC is far more "mud slinging" in attack than Klazu. Yet, Rousseau will be called "passionate" again and Klazu is called a mud slinger, funny... Don't even want to know what I will be called!

It's hardly bizarre unless you're suggesting there aren't far better places out of Canada to spend retirement.

BC was huge in the 1990s for those of my grandparents generation. I can't think of anyone in my parent's generation that retired out there. It's just so far removed from this part of Canada.

Personally, when I retire (42 years from now.. sigh), if I do in Canada, it will be in one of the smaller gorgeous towns in Ontario (think Cobourg, Niagara-On-The-Lake, Paris, Stratford...

And that is the key term, "within Canada", which seemed to have gone over many people's heads. And I never read anything about everyone wanting to retire in BC, just that within Canada it is arguably the #1 retirement destination. After the first couple pages I stopped reading the argument because it was getting too silly, not sure what was said after that. The comments were going alone the lines that "no one wants to retire in BC / doing so is crazy / the weather sucks / etc.." which all seemed pretty much like attacks and hyperboles to me. The same way I have never really met anyone in BC who wants to retire in Florida, but that does not mean that Florida isn't a popular destination.

Okay, this is my last comment.

I've seen some of the conversation. I don't recall anyone saying no one wants to retire to BC. It's simply not a large retirement destination here. I don't know how you can't wrap your head around that. You only see blue hairs in the Niagara Region. BC isn't the only place especially for those that can afford BC. Most choose to avoid even the mildest winters available here in Canada.

Same applies with mountains and babbling brooks. That doesn't peak everyone's interest. My parent's grew up around the Alps but, they haven't lived next to mountains for 50 years. Mountains barely register anymore.

I love BC and especially the lower mainland and the gulf islands, more than just the climate and scenery it's a unique and soulful place for the most part. That being said, for the sake of accuracy, it's worth mentioning that BC is a popular retirement destination for Western Canada but not for all of Canada. Keep in mind that Western Canada is just 1/3 of the national population. In Eastern Canada (2/3 of national population), most people retire either locally or down South in Florida or the Caribbean/Latin America. I'm willing to bet that for those retiring outside their home province that Florida is the #1 retirement destination. These patterns are for obvious reasons, most people who have built social circles and a collective memory in a city/region will tend to retire in a place that gives them easy access to that city/region but with some features they don't get there (such as year-round warm weather, lower cost-of-living and an exotic culture). I can find a retirement location down south just a $100 flight away (Miami/Fort Lauderdale airports) in the same time zone as Toronto and live in year round warm weather for less, as much as I love BC, it just doesn't compete for those of us down here. And if one is willing to learn basic Spanish, then the destination options increase even more.

Son instead of the constant Calgary vs Montreal arguments, now we have Vancouver vs Toronto? This is beyond ridiculous now lol.

Lets just be happy that we have a country that has so many fantastic cities and lets not have to knock another city in order to build up our own, can we all agree to that and stop acting like children now?

Thank you, one of the biggest things that bothers me about this country.

After trashing Calgary non stop a few months ago I guess you all got bored, and now it is Van / BC's turn.

We get it, Ontario and Quebec are great, BC and Alberta (specifically Calgary) are terrible at everything and there is nothing positive that Ontario and Quebec could ever possibly learn from the west.

You win, now fucking give it a rest. You ever wonder why so few from BC (and now it seems a decreasing number of people from Calgary) post on the Canadian section?

Seriously, it has become the Ontario / Quebec clubhouse.

Not being in agreement that everything in BC is so hunky dorily perfect isn't bashing it. And if someone doesn't care for the place, so what? Does it really hurt your feelings that much that someone doesn't have the same affectations as you? Every part of the country gets dumped on from time to time (which usually only happens in response to obnoxious posters). Stop being so thin skinned.

I think it's because Canadians travel abroad more than within our own country, so many people from the east never make it out west and vice versa...

I dated a westerner for a while a couple years ago.. a guy born in Calgary, grew up in Saskatchewan, who went to school in Kingston. It really made me realize how little people know about the other halves of our country.

This. Canada is so vastly gigantic it is easier to travel outside the country to boot. When I lived in NL it was always funny booking flights back to visit the parents because I could have flown to the United Kingdom, Austria, Spain, even places in Africa for the same or less travel time.

I count myself lucky to have had a pretty large view of Canada because it's not the norm for most people.

You can't blame Canadians for wanting to travel abroad when it's often cheaper to fly to Europe than it is to Halifax or St. John's (at least from Western Canada).

When I retire (in about 20 years), it will most definitely be outside of Canada (probably in the USA). The bigger question is whether I choose to remain in Canada for the remainder of my career, or make the move to warmer climes during my working years. I suspect the latter will be the case.

Just responding to the bolded part - I hear this a lot and I do wonder why. This thread in particular is typically a love-in for Vancouver. Montreal's skyline gets a lot of love here too. I find that Toronto and Calgary more often get ignored.

I'm going to have to go back and re-read a few pages as I see all this drama but I can't recall anything happening that would have started it all. Like some sort of spontaneous dramatic combustion.
