Blocky mid-rises are relatively new to Vancouver. Our 1960-80's cascading mid-rises are more "classically Vancouver". This is more European than anything.

That doesn't look like Vancouver at all. Vancouver is a pin cushion, with individual towers sticking out of the grass. The Don Lands in Toronto are an attempt at midrise density in a vaguely Rotterdam riverfront kind of way.

Well, it looks similar to Olympic Village and current Southeast False Creek waterfront development:

Ah, I see. Not "Vancouver-ish," but somewhat similar in form, if not in the details.

Thanks, vanman. That was exactly what I had in my mind. There is also nothing bad with Toronto taking a cue from the best.

C'mon let's be real. Toronto's been doing blocky mid-rises way longer. As far as mid-rises go, this is more classically-Vancouver:

If by "the best" you mean the European model of urban development, then yeah, I guess. If by "the best" you mean Vancouver, then you're wrong on two counts.

I think the distinctive feature here is not the blocks of midrise (which, yes, are common in Europe) but the mixture of towers, midrises and a well-planned walkable green waterfront/seawall. Towers are not common at all in European cities, but Vancouver does this kind of mized development a lot and very, very successfully.

There is no need to feel threatened by little brother showing example for once.

Toronto's been doing this since the late 70s...

You can't blame them. They're fed stuff about being "The Greatest Place on Earth". What else did you expect?

Okay, can the fucking anti BC shit stop now? Seriously, this is getting fucking annoying. Or at least keep it to one thread.

After trashing Calgary non stop a few months ago I guess you all got bored, and now it is Van / BC's turn.

We get it, Ontario and Quebec are great, BC and Alberta (specifically Calgary) are terrible at everything and there is nothing positive that Ontario and Quebec could ever possibly learn from the west.

You win, now fucking give it a rest. You ever wonder why so few from BC (and now it seems a decreasing number of people from Calgary) post on the Canadian section?

Seriously, it has become the Ontario / Quebec clubhouse.

^I get the frustration, but why Quebec? No members from Quebec have ranted against BC or Vancouver...

As a neutral member in this debate, I just have to say people are overreacting on both sides... Klazu's comments about Vancouver showing the way for Toronto sounds pretty elitist and Toronto users shouldn't be reacting so harshly to those comments because they have nothing to be ashamed about. Everyone has something to learn from another...

I'm not quite sure why you're so defensive. Some are claiming that Toronto's new urban neighbourhoods are inspired by Vancouver - we say it's not. This is a continuation of the same type of granular urban development spearheaded by the original St. Lawrence revitalization in the 1970s-1980s.

Yeah, was just noticing that it is pretty much all from Ontario forum members, should not have lumped Quebec in there.

flipv, as you may or may not know it is not a comment regarding this thread alone, a lot of the negativity on here is directly stemming from another thread (the housing bubble one, along with some other recent negative activity) and several of the comments above have nothing to do with the urban form discussion, just jabbing at BC / BC members.

The the two issues I think you are referring to are this one and the one about retirees. The first claim was that everyone from Ontario/Quebec wish to retire in BC and the second one, which we are discussing here, is that Toronto someone copied or borrowed an idea from Vancouver. The falacy being Toronto has been doing it longer than Vancouver. Now what kind of reaction would you expect?

Agreed that some of the claims were incorrect and silly, but the overblown counter reaction has gone on long enough, at it has been used as an excuse for such members as rousseau and Lio45 to unleash their all so familiar rehashed dislike (hatred?) of BC with countless backhanded, smug, negative comments that are thinly veiled behind the discussions at hand. Then other have followed them (knowingly and unknowingly) and it has become a shit parade.

LeftCoaster was talking sense for a while, but since his last post the argument went on for another 3 or 4 pages, became quite the headache to read.
