Mr. Mikes Saskatoon

Just wanted to give a shout-out to Mr. Mikes. I was there for lunch yesterday and it was some good eats!! The service was excellent, the restaurant and "lodge" were clean and tidy. I was very impressed and I'll definitely be going back!! The hostess said the big media dinner is on Tuesday (February 10, 2015) night, and a grand opening will be following shortly thereafter.

I would be very surprised if the current/soon-to-be former location of Beily's turns into anything but another bar/night club.

We'll likely see a renovation and a reopening late spring/early summer.

I wouldn't mind a change back into Champs, myself.

Housing starts Jan. 2015

Saskatoon had 59 single starts and 96 multiple starts for a total of 155
Regina had a total of 97
Edmonton had a whopping 1832 total starts - second only to Toronto in the country

The business I look forward to vacating 8th St. is Dodge City - it seems out of place there and the tacky lot lights don't help

Brother in law works for Dodge city. Don't hold your breath on them moving. They had a lot in the auto mall off of Circle Drive near the Willows but sold it years ago.

Beily’s closure a sign of changing times for Saskatoon restaurants?

Beily's is actually renovating and reopening under a different name in six to eight weeks.

Surprising that the media can't grasp this. No bar/club stays open for that long under the same name. They need to re-brand to stay popular.

But I suppose the point of the article is discussing how Saskatoon owned-restaurants are failing. I don't think that's necessarily the case. Maybe sub-par local restaurants are closing...

Stonebridge overpass

Glad I don't live in Stonebridge and am waiting for the overpass into highway11. Not going to be done until next year(?). There won't be a southbound exit because there are only 50-100 cars a day that go that way. What about five years down the road. A few weeks ago the Mayor said if the developer doesn't get it done the city will build it and bill the developer. It could be built in the winter if they thought ahead. I don't know what the arrangement is with the developer but the City should be responsible for road construction.

The restaurant industry by its very nature has constant comings and goings. Places open, succeed, fail, rise and fall, and are bought and sold. The list of independent restaurants that have closed over the years proves nothing. They all close for different reasons, and under different circumstances. And then compare that list to the list of independent places that have opened in that same timeframe. The article mentions the closure of Souleio, but it doesn't mention that Ayden opened in its place.

Ridiculous story. If you think the independents are struggling, try going out for dinner and drinks in Downtown, Broadway, or Riversdale on almost any night of the week. The places worth their stock are packed.

According to today's Statscan report Saskatoon was over 300,000 as of July 1st. Should put us around 305,000 as of today.

It is too bad that Concorde couldn't have a nice downtown office, but I understand that they would rather use their existing buildings and property. I suppose that only makes sense.
I also see that Adrenaline (the big orange awning) is moving to 51st and Faithful. That either going to be a very big restaurant or they will need something else to fill that space.

Saskatoon region growing three times faster than all of Canada

Saskatoon CMA population crosses 300,000

Reported by François Biber, NewsTalk 650 CKOM

Feb 11-12, 2015

Population in the Saskatoon region grew three times more than the national rate according to Statistics Canada.

The agency's latest numbers show Saskatoon’s census metropolitan area (CMA) grew by 9,600 to 300,642 people in 2014. That’s 3.2 per cent CMA growth in one year. The population of Canada grew 1.1 per cent in the same period.

Willowgrove school opening delayed indefinitely

Joint public-Catholic school has no estimated date of completion after several delays

Reported by Lasia Kretzel, NewsTalk 650 CKOM

Feb 12-13, 2015

They were supposed to open in September, then November, then January, but now, no one knows when two new Willowgrove neighbourhood schools will open.

Last month, Saskatoon Public Schools released a fifth notice that construction on the joint Holy Family Catholic School and Willowgrove Public School was delayed yet again, and they said they do not know when the school will be ready.

Apparently all of the delays are due to the public school side. Both school divisions have a mutual understanding that they won't open until both schools are complete.

Did both divisions pick the same contractor?

This makes me less confident that schools in Rosewood, Stonebridge, Hampton and Evergreen will be completed in any reasonable amount of time.

Just watch... Dundonald will have over 800 kids by the time Hampton Village's school gets shovels in the ground.

They should really be making these new schools bigger. Design them for 500-600 students. Not 350-400. I would rather have a school that has too much extra space than a school where kids get one gym period a week.

There were two architects on the project, one for each school division. However the building was tendered as a single project, with EllisDon being the "successful" bidder.
