I always found it odd how they made those short little condo buildings (the ones with the cantilevered section on the top) when all the rest of the buildings on the central waterfront were sizable highrises. I wonder if there was a height restriction or something there...
I believe it has something to do with them being at the foot of Yonge St. They wanted something striking, less imposing and more open. I think they have achieved that.
I don't think it looks small, actually its rather bulky compared to Calgary with more substantial buildings stretching out deeper from the core. But it is shorter than Calgary, that much is clear, but some new towers will change that.
I thought Ottawa's downtown was about the same size as Calgary's, just gets bigger when you add the area around the market. Obviously being an older city, the density outside the core was noticeable too, nothing like Toronto or Montreal though.
Never crossed the river, how is the density on the Quebec side? it looked OK from Ottawa, but also had a gritty industrial look to it as well...
It "looks" smaller than Calgary, but it certainly doesn't feel any smaller at street level. I was in Sofia and Bucharest this week and both cities are more or less in the same population range (1,3 M and 2,2 M) and lack a skyline (save for few scattered towers here and there) But at street level they feel dense and big, Bucharest in particular.
On the other hand Warsaw (pop. 2,6 M) is bigger and has a great skyline but felt smaller with its wide boulevards and lower density. I am not saying that Calgary feels smaller than Ottawa, but I think a compact urban fabric can make a big difference at street level and it definitely makes up for the lack of height.

I would definitely agree with this. Unless you are walking around looking up, you almost don't notice whether you are beside a 10 storey building or a 50 storey building. The skyline is more something to be appreciated from a distance.
