Think I'm gonna support Biskupski for mayor. Ralph has done a good job the last two terms but I believe it's time for some new blood.
Knowing her personally, I don't think she'd be a very good mayor.

I don't think it takes much to be a mayor anyway.

T-Mac, that last photo of the Capitol Theatre should be on every brochure, website, program and ticket they sell. Wow.

This is news that may have been missed:

Economists predict robust year in Salt Lake County real estate
http://www.sltrib.com/news/2121761-155/economists-predict-robust-year-in-salt

Quote:
Nearly 30 percent of the county's 11,490 home sales in 2014 were made in Salt Lake City, while half were spread across suburban communities: West Jordan, Sandy, West Valley City, Taylorsville, Draper, Herriman and Riverton.
Above is probably the biggest news regarding residential in SLC in a very long time. I would also love to see them account for apartments as well rather than just houses and condos.

But this does show that even though other cities are adding housing, SLC is still growing and in some cases, faster than other cities (in sales, not counting births).

I think numbers like these are great as they do show people are moving to SLC faster than previous years and this will only continue as new opportunities are opened.

So while not the biggest development news, it is news that can lead to more developments.

Thanks Jedi. It is such a beautiful building and the new Ballet West addition turned out really well.

Somebody posed the question regarding growth and development in Sugar House and whether or not there are new projects moving forward. There is a large project on Wilmington Avenue directly across the street from the RDA multifamily residential project that is currently under construction. That building will become the tallest building in Sugar House at over 100 feet. It will have 4 levels of parking and 6 levels of housing above. It will contain various types of senior living depending on the different needs of residents i.e. Alzheimer units, assisted living, etc. There is also street level retail.

There is also a terrible idea to build a CVS on the northwest corner of 2100 South and 1300 East. It faces an uphill battle as it will require numerous city approvals. Here is a link to the proposed plans: https://sugarhousecouncil.files.wordpress.com/2015/01/cvs.pdf

That corner is extremely difficult to turn into. It'll cause major problems for any retailer there. And more congestion for that intersection.

I'm trying to grasp the negative aspects of this proposal. What's so terrible? If you're in a car, you may have to make an extra turn or two to get in and out. But are we gonna let that be an excuse to never build anything meaningful at that corner?

There are other things that could be built there that won't cause quite so much congestion. For example, an office building where the employees only come and go in the morning and evening, instead of a large number of cars coming and going all day.

An office building will have multiple tenants and probably hundreds of visitors if the tenants include Doctors offices, Dental offices, etc. It won't be any better than a CVS.

I think there are lots of issues with a CVS at that corner and more specifically the CVS they have designed for that corner that completely ignores 2100 South. This is a major gateway into the Sugar House Business District and I think a one story retail store that is a completely suburban model but flipped so parking is not against the street is inappropriate. Further, the parking may be in the right location but there is no way to access the building from 2100 South. There are plenty of locations in the city that it could work but not a major corner like this. Why couldn't they partner with another developer and develop a substantial building with the retail on the ground floor and office or residential above? I've seen CVS do it in other cities.

You're totally right. I looked over the CVS plans and, yeah, the only thing special about it is where they put the parking. Otherwise, just another run-of-the-mill Walgreens-type place. We already have a couple completely suburban Walgreens in Salt Lake (in Sugar House on 21st South and, more reprehensibly, in Central City on 4th South).

SugarHouse is being overrun by chains and it's very off-putting as a life-long resident of the neighborhood.

Sugarhouse is the classc case of yuppie influx and gentrification.

In the 80's, Sugarhood was thought of in the same vein as we regard Glendale or Fairpark today.

32 assorted flavors of Vanilla now.

I'm so glad the East Wing of the LDS Biz college was torn down and they are renovating the Enos Wall mansion. It has such an amazing street presence and adds to South Temple, especially now that the East Wing is gone. That is all. Thanks for the update Isaac!

I know. It looks amazing now. I actually wish they would tear down both wings, though.

Cool article in the Trib today about the old Tampico Restaurant.
For those that were too young, it was on Regent Street closer to 2nd South.
Good Mexican food, and what seemed to be authentic atmosphere.
The article also mentions that "City planners want to see new restaurants and clubs on Regent Street between 100 So. and 200 So.", something we already knew, but reassuring.
It would be cool if the original Tampico could re-materialize, although Tequila may be hard to come by, what with the DABC bureaucracy blockade.
And sorry, I could have just added a link to the article, but need a primer on that.
