Currently -15 in Québec city. I really love my city, but I'm sometimes afraid of the kind of temperatures we're getting around here...

Why on Earth would I need a jacket at 15 when I don't need one at 10? I'm a 220 lb man, I'm a furnace. It's the middle of winter, I'll take what I can get of this weather.

That said, currently 10 degrees as of 10 am.

Currently -1C and partly cloudy in Moncton.

We had a storm last night, but it ended up with only about 7 cm of snow and 20 mm of rain. Very tough shovelling this morning.......

They are predicting snowmageddon in Boston and New York City tomorrow into Tuesday - maybe as much as 60-90 cm of snow. We're going to get the same thing about 12-18 hours later, but the current forecast is only for about 30 cm of snow here. We'll just have to wait and see.

So far, this winter has been slightly colder than average but our storm events have mostly been rainy. This next storm might be our first big one since early December.

A few pictures from CBC NL.

Storm surge:

Damage in Gander:

Lots of roofs/verandas and the like damaged across the island. A few trucks/trailers blown over on the highways.

Power should be restored to the Bonavista and Corner Brook regions within two hours and then there will be no reported outages.

Winds have died down now. Sun even came for a bit.

And the rain cut the snow in St. John's down quite a lot, thankfully.

FWIW this winter has almost certainly been quite a bit colder so far everywhere in the East and Northeast judging by what was on the ground in Mass and Conn yesterday. Levels of old, iced, crusty snow on the ground that are actually close to what's typical of a southern Quebec winter. Gave me the feeling those places haven't been on grass since a long time.

Out of curiosity, comparing our average monthly highs to those of 2014 in their entirety:

Month: Average High/2014 High

Red = Above Average in 2014; Blue = Below.

January: -0.8C / 1.2C
February: -1.1C / -2.8C
March: 1C / -1.3C
April: 5.6C / 4.2C
May: 11.1C / 8.2C
June: 15.8C / 15.8C
July: 20.7C / 25.3C
August: 20.5C / 19.4C
September: 16.5C / 17.4C
October: 10.8C / 12.9C
November: 6.4C / 7.9C
December: 1.8C / 3.4C

Ottawa's January so far:
-Snowfall, January 1 to January 25: 44cm
-Average snowfall count for all of January: 53.9cm

-Average daily high: -6.6C
-Seasonal average daily high for January: -5.8C

The popular perception of this winter is that it's been a lot colder than normal but also a lot less snowy than normal. The stats show that this really hasn't been the case, both temperatures & snowfall have been close to seasonal.

Windsor gets more snow in an average winter than Toronto, Hamilton, Brantford, Burlington, and Chatham. It's because Windsor occasionally gets lake-effect snow off of Lake Michigan and we're closer to the Ohio Valley winter storm track.

That said, those numbers posted above are incorrect for all those cities (unless maybe they only came from last winter and are not averages).

A fair amount of people in T-shirts today. Saw lots of joggers in shorts and t-shirts.

Some places around the city have hit 20C Officially 17C at the airport, likely the hotspot of the country.

Well yeah, that is easily t-shirt jogging weather!

Hoping to see an official 20 in Alberta this week.

Currently 14 to 15 in much of the Fraser Valley in BC.

Most other costal locations are 11 to 13 again.

Currently 15 here in Metrotown. The thermometer in my car had 16 degrees driving around Vancouver after dark yesterday!

According to Environment Canada, it hasn't dipped below 10 degrees in roughly 60 hours. Yet somehow Calgary dropped to just +2 last night.

It was 15 degrees (Weathernetwork) when I was out running the seawall in Vancouver with a nice mix of sun and cloud. Lots of flowers starting to open, it smells like spring out there. Muggy with the humidity as well.

If Calgary officially surpassed 17.0C today then they have broken an ALL TIME record the warmest day ever recorded in January. The previous record was 17C. So it's possible a record has been broken.

Not every warm spell in Calgary is a Chinook. Some warm Chinook winds might have helped, but this warmth is largely due to a massive ridge in the jet stream sucking up warm air from the south mixed with warm pineapple express air from the west.
