I suspect the phones in most of your pockets have assemblies made by Flextronics or some other contract manufacturer, and maybe a chip from Qualcomm, perhaps something like a processor from Mitsubishi, and glass from someone else. Still, if something goes wrong, it is Apple, or Nokia, or Motorola, or whomever's name is on the product that needs to respond, stand up for their product, and the components from others that they approved for this purpose. Just sayin'.
From a passenger perspective yes this does play a role since people only hear "Boeing". However in the actual industry stuff like this can cost the engine manufacturers orders, as airlines choose the engine on the aircraft. So Rolls Royce will definitely want to make sure it is handled.

Of course in this day and age you can hear and find out about every little single aviation glitch, squawk, and incident. I actually wonder if a few of us avgeeks weren't tweeting about this as it happened if the local media would have even jumped on it?

WRT 787 engine selection, the 788 is the first airplane that can have engine manufacturers swapped between GE and RR. For all aircraft before 788 the originating airline choice of engine determined the airplanes life time choice. The 788 was designed so that engine manufacturers could be swapped, the engine and the strut has to be replaced over the 2-3 day time period.

It doesn't matter who makes the engines or batteries really, they're designed for a Boeing 787. All the different components on the aircraft no doubt come from a plethora of manufacturers and together make up a product we call the 787.

The incident made national breaking news here very briefly yesterday. Perhaps because of current levels of alertness what with the happenings across the English channel. At this time a BA (or any UK) flight declaring emergency is something that's going to shoot to the top of the news.

Radio described the destination as "the aircraft was heading for Calgary", not "Calgary, Canada" or "heading for the city of Calgary in Canada", just "Calgary" full stop. Brits have good general knowledge on the whole when it comes to geography, especially the older generation. I was aware of it before agreeing to work there.

But looks like things are starting to come together now.
If I had a dime for every time I heard about Transport Canada paperwork delays, I could buy Westjet a 788.

Also, my understanding is that WS is leasing the aircraft from Boeing, so I wonder why Transport Canada would be involved in the aircraft side of things. I could see Transport being involved in the other aspects (e.g. operating manuals and Operating Certificate amendments) of the widebody introduction.

Finally with 9 months to go before first flight, I have every confidence that WS will meet the first flight date for 763.

Do you know something we don't? 90 months is 7.5 years out. People are probably hoping for something a little sooner.

Interesting fact from that Independent article, it states the flight had 213 passengers on board. Seatguru shows the BA 787's have 214 seats in total. One empty seat, that's a nice full flight.
Are all of the B787's fitted with the Rolls Royce engines???
If so - which model??
I know that the B777 is fitted with different engines from Rolls Royce - Pratt & Whitney and General Electric, but not sure on the model of engines.

Currently for the 787 airlines have the choice of:

-Rolls Royce Trent 1000
-General Electric GEnx

I've got my first flight on a 787 coming up in a couple of weeks (Shanghai-LA, on my way back to Calgary). Got a window seat too, so I'll be able to check out the new larger windows with the electronic tinting.

Flying on a 747 back to Shanghai, which is another type I've never flown on, so I'm looking forward to the trip, even if it is on United.

I was on one of their college theme planes a while back and when the flight attendants said in their announcements "If there is anything we can do to make your flight more enjoyable please let us know" a bunch of guys in Gonzaga gear started heckling "repaint the plane".

So AC and WS gonna start up YXT. fun times.

An announcment to be made in YHZ. I guess YHZ might be getting some love too.

Nice! Let's hope oil is back up to $100+ by then!

WS1534 YYC1025 – 1522IAH 73W D
WS1535 IAH1700 – 2008YYC 73W D

The timing doesn't look to be the best for business travel or outbound connections, I would think a later departure from both YYC and IAH would work better? But I'm sure those at WS route planning know more than I.

YYC-IAH going to have some much needed competition me thinks!

Yeah, the timing seems odd.

Well... these routes would have been planned well before the massive drop in oil $$ but 8 months to get it back up there :-)

It's timed for connections from within Canada at Calgary.
