Hope the signage ends up looking a lot better at night because looking at that shot in the daylight turns a beautiful Renaissance Revival 19th. century beauty into a Walmart , K mart , cluster f--k .

The building historically had a bright neon sign (to basically the exact size and specs of the current sign).

Inga makes a few good points about the general state of architecture in Philly that I agree with.

Philadelphia's rowhouse streets, and even many of its commercial ones, follow a certain predictable rhythm. Redbrick building follows redbrick building. Windows and doors are usually flush with the facades. Buildings may sport finer or worse details than others, but this is not a city of statement architecture and icons.

With that said, this little gem is awesome. Reminds me a bit of a smaller version of the Cira Centre. It's certainly encouraging to see Jefferson (responsible for many ugly bland brick buildings in Wash Sq) attempt better architecture in the same vain that Drexel has done over the past few years.

I'm all for the Piccadilly look of the digital signage (would love to see it help enliven West Market, too), but I think an opaque board atop Lit Brothers would look better. Not a fan of being able to see through it, to its supports, etc. But admittedly the transparent screen is more historically accurate.

Didn't get a picture but there is a fence around the current Drexel building and it looks like they've started emptying the building in preparation for the demo.
