Orienting the play areas more towards Argyle might have been quieter, but I agree with daycare towards Argyle. It's a reasonable tradeoff. The layout seems good, but the exterior is ugh, especially the Elphinstone elevation. I would also have placed the "heritage walk" on Elphinstone instead of along the parking lot.
Argyle is the most logical and most aesthetically pleasing location for parking. They don't need a 50 ft setback from 13th. Putting the parking there doesn't necessitate having the playground on 13th. It's just laziness.

Doesn't change what is coming. Just the timing.

Looking back at it, I agree. My first read was to keep the parking lot away from the existing residential fabric, but the parking was on Argyle previously.

I live in the south, and we're well-served... but then again, people made similar comments about Co-op/Sobeys/Safeway/Superstore/Costco in the east... figured one would close. None did. Matter of fact, WalMart added groceries.

Overwaitea itself is exceptionally unlikely (they have no locations outside BC), but their Save-on-Foods brand might be an option. Still seems odd for them to retrofit an old building in Regina as their beachhead beyond the Alberta border. Weirder things have happened, though (e.g. Tony Roma's opened in a former Consumers' Distributing)

To be fair, Extra Foods in the east did close. And Sobeys is rumoured to be moving to White City.

Notice in the foreground (near shoreline) the black street lamps poking above the canopy of white trees. I love these classic new lamps -- very European looking, and befitting of a provincial capital. I noticed the other day that the black lamps have been extended to both sides of Hill Blvd (off Albert Street), making for an impressive gateway into Wascana Centre and the Legislative grounds-- especially impressive when the trees are hoar-frosted! Seems the entire south side of Wascana Park (bordering the Lake and Legislature) is now adorned with these classic lamps. Hope they eventually make it all the way around the Lake, to the north side along Wascana Drive.

These. Pictures should. Be seen during the holidays simply amazing

An Overwaitea brand is most likely at Armour Crossing.

This is going out on a tangent a bit but I worked at Tony Roma's when it was first built and in getting to know the owners I found out they had originally applied to get an Applebee's franchise and open it at that location but their application was denied due to the franchiser feeling Regina was a poor market for their brand. Tony Roma's was their second choice and they were accepted for that so that's what it became.

Oh the times, how they change. Now we have two Applebee's locations here.

Would some one be kind enough to clarify with the new stadium development for how much longer are we likely to be seeing four cranes up simultaneously?

I would assume until late fall 2015. At which point the steel, I would only imagine, would be all up. Considering 2016 is substantial completion. However that is only a guess.

All four cranes will be up until 2016 when roof is complete.

I've heard from a second source that the old South Albert Canadian tire is being looked at for a Fuddruckers franchise. The person I spoke to has a relative in real estate who was working with the owners.

Regina - The Motor City

General Motors Assembly Plant. Regina, SK, 1928.
(Canadian Public Domain)
If not for the 1929 Stock Market Crash and the Great Depression that followed, Regina, Saskatchewan may be more commonly called the Motor City today. And not the Queen City, as Reginans know it.

The Roaring Twenties was the happiest of times. World War I had ended. The soldiers were back home living it up. Stock prices were rising. People had money and were spending it freely. Charles Lindbergh flew solo across the Atlantic. Babe Ruth was the biggest name in sports and the best paid. There was jazz music, flappers, and bootleggers like Chicago’s infamous Al Capone. While Canada saw only two prime ministers in office in Ottawa, the United States saw as many as four presidents elected to Washington. Nearly everyone had a radio, this before TV. Trains were the way to travel great distances and to transport goods and raw material across North America.

In Canada, there was a huge demand for our homegrown raw material, wheat and lumber in particular. The third most-populated province at the time, behind only to Ontario and Quebec, Saskatchewan was riding on its own wave of prosperity with its agriculturally-based economy. Financial indicators showed Saskatchewan to be an area of unlimited potential. Third in GDP and due to soaring wheat prices by the end of the 1920s, Saskatchewan’s per capita income made it one of the richest places on earth. The capital city of Regina—named after Queen Victoria —witnessed a construction boom. The city was growing rapidly. By the end of the 1920s, the Queen City had over 50,000 residents. There were restaurants, shopping centers, and 6 downtown movie theatres .

How times have changed a great history story

Legislative Dome

Inside the Sask. legislative building dome construction

"REGINA – There’s a little less beauty and a little more construction at Saskatchewan’s historic legislative building lately.

A $15-million facelift of the iconic dome has left it hidden from the public – covered by a white, vinyl structure...."
