Interesting article in the LA Times on how much of the city's urban policies and urbanity in general is reflective of its Latino culture and heritage with a special shoutout to Broadway and its transformations.

I like Hawthorne, but writing that allowing murals and street vendors is a central and south american influence is misguided. Loads of US cities have allowed and encouraged murals for decades. Philadelphia, for example, has had a city-wide mural program since at least the mid-90s. Street vendors have been selling food on the street in other cities since, well, forever. LA is just getting caught up to the rest of the country, never mind the rest of the western hemisphere.

Is the 1200 fig project expected to break ground this month?

Plus has fig central officially broke ground, or is possible that the ground breaking could be stalled for a while?

I actually find this building quite interesting. The wormhole pulls one's attention into the building's facade without taking too much from the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall. Buildings like this, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and Caltrans District 7 HQ make downtown L.A. more interesting architecturally.

Did you happen to see the original plan? Besides, there is more than enough dull architecture that surrounds the Disney, so its iconic status is not threatened.

I really doubt we'll see a ground-breaking this year on 1200 Figueroa, and if they did, it would be largely symbolic. I would guess we're looking at a mid to late 1st quarter time frame for dirt moving on that lot. Which is fine by me. We have to save some of the fun for next year.

Looks like the third crane is getting ready to go up for Metropolis. Also noticed that they've started painting over the exposed concrete for Onni's 9th & Olive

Take photos of Figueroa now, because it'll be something else entirely once Fig Central, 1200 fig, the carwash site, and the luxe conversion take hold on the street.

Wow. Much better then I expected. What a game changer. Can't believe this is happening, and in an improved form no less. I still remember the first time fencing went up, only for nothing to happen.

450K sf is a pretty good chunk of retail so I assume they will need at least one major anchor tenant like a department store. Nordstrom? Bloomingdales?

Probably. My guess is that since the development company is Chinese it will market both the hotel and residential units to Chinese customers (very much like Metropolis), which means very high end.

I wish the city would dump Related and let one of these Chinese companies take over development of 2nd and Grand. I mean what's the hold-up. They've had about 10 years now to develop that property. Even the courthouse is under construction and with these last congresses that's a small miracle in and of itself.
