Sorry to continue with this tangent... But...
Mandarin - 4 tones + neutrum "tone"
Cantonese - 8 tones + a light neutrum "tone"
My partner speaks 100% fluent Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien, Hock Chew and Hock Chia and very good Malay and Tamil. It's taken me half my life to sort these all out but man it's amazing how similar some can sound then completely throw me for a loop.
I've been at two weddings recently in Singapore one with over 850 guests and the other over 450. It's amazing how everyone flips between dialects without the bat of an eyelash. I'm learning... But still struggle with the dialects.
