Chinese New Year is mid February this year and the animal appears to be the sheep. But for YYCAA it will not be a year of in like a lamb out like a lion.

Also expect a lot of lobby by AC and Calin in particular, so at least one roadshow with Calgary chamber of commerce. Also there will be one big caveat t the announcement, subject to the competition tribunal agreeing to AC-CA joint venture on commercially viable terms. That is where the lobbying effort will be directed towards the federal govt. No JV no new service to china and the Canadian jobs that go along with it.

Well it won't be Gong hei fat choi as they don't speak Cantonese in Beijing.

I wish they spoke Cantonese instead of Mandarin in all of China...

I'm glad they don't. Mandarin is hard enough with 4 tones - I'd hate to try something that's got 9(?) like Cantonese does.

I'd say with the new terminal, if at least one of Shanghai, Beijing, or Hong Kong, doesn't get announced in 2015, that'd be a letdown.

PEK is a given subject to gov't approval (AC metal).

HKG would probably be 2016 at the earliest (CX).

PVG is a real long shot in the short term at least. (??)

I don't know the details on landing some of these flights, but what about a Dubai flight over the next year or so?

I would put that below PVG actually. Very unlikely.

And Air China and Air Canada are "consolidating" their YVR flights into two daily next summer. Both operating with 773s.

Last summer CA flew 11 weekly to/from YVR all on 332s... So 4 less frequencies, but on larger aircraft.

One could argue, if the CA/AC JV gets the tick of approval.... 4 frequencies per week have just opened up for......???

I feel like AC converting some 788 orders to 789 works against YYC to some degree as that frame is better suited to this market. Not a deal breaker and it's not like they were going to launch PVG and DXB for us with the 788's that will now be 789's, but hey it's something to think about.

True. But there are still more 788s to come and some of the new 788 routes will most likely become 789 routes too. So can shuffle down to more 788 possibilities. I really doubt AC would launch YYC-DXB (very unlikely ) or YYC-PVG (unlikely ) though. At least not in the next 5 years... I do see YVR-CAN and YVR-DEL before either of those.

After PEK the next most likely destination is HKG by CX or potentially KE to ICN with their 789s, though this is probably less likely. I struggle to see another international route by AC for a while.

But that's cause I'm biased, Cantonese person here. Wasn't there like a vote or something in Ancient times to see if the whole country would use Cantonese or Mandarin?

Sorry to continue with this tangent... But...

Mandarin - 4 tones + neutrum "tone"
Cantonese - 8 tones + a light neutrum "tone"

My partner speaks 100% fluent Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien, Hock Chew and Hock Chia and very good Malay and Tamil. It's taken me half my life to sort these all out but man it's amazing how similar some can sound then completely throw me for a loop.
I've been at two weddings recently in Singapore one with over 850 guests and the other over 450. It's amazing how everyone flips between dialects without the bat of an eyelash. I'm learning... But still struggle with the dialects.

Ok back to YYC!

Sooooooo I'm back from a week in SJD

Departed last Sunday on a Scimitar Winglet 738 and returned on a regular 738 yesterday but got to land on 35R (pretty lights everywhere

).

Boeing just tweeted that upstart Jetlines has announced an order for 5 737 MAX 7's.

Nice pics, (on other social media) Bigtime. Did you deliberately choose seats that gave an advantageous scimitar view?

Speaking of the east runway, ACA044 from Hawaii requested 17L, not that it was required, but that he just "liked" it better. She sure is purty with all those lights on. Regarding Jetlines, my money is on them receiving 'at least' a couple of airplanes until they run into cash flow problems. I know, always the optimist...

Actually on both flights we were in row 15, right behind the 2nd exit row. That scimitar shot was taken from the back as I waited for the lav! That scimitar sure looks nice though, the kids were bummed out they didn't get the Mickeyjet though.

That's funny about ACA044 requesting the new runway, I sure liked the look of it landing last night. Big airport feel with those inset lights and such.

Read a column in Metro last night about the airport/Nav Canada petitioning Transport to allow for less deviation on departure from 17L/35R (10 degrees instead of 15) and that the turn doesn't start until 1000' agl. You guys hear anything about that yet?

Nope. I'm guessing they're taking the "optics" route, trying to look like they're doing something to attenuate the noise complaints. Grand scheme of things, it would hardly represent a noticeable change from current practice from the NIMBY point of view.

More effective would be an SNA type departure where they hold the brakes, go full power like a bat out of hell then pull way back on the climb.

I get the feeling the airlines wouldn't like that much and there'd be a whole lot of 17L landers and a whole lot of 17R departures. Which, coincidentally, is yet another option.
