I would think maybe to 3 daily... or maybe even 4 daily to match Alaska!

Jon Ostrower currently tweeting out some 787 stats for the 3 year Flight Global report, this one caught my eye:

Quote:
LAN: 787-8 burns 12% less fuel than a 767-300ER (wnglets). Air Canada: 251-pax -8 29% cheaper than 191-pax 767-300
Makes BA still having an issue in the YYC market with the 787 kind of sad. I'm sure they are getting similar economic boosts with their 788's.

AC has seven 763 that are more than 25 years old, and none are newer than 2001. Half of LAN's 763 are ~6 years old or less, and their oldest is a 1995 build... and of course wingletted. I imagine that is skewing the statistic.

BA's 763 are similar in age to those of AC, though they have Rolls engines vs the AC/CP Pratt/GE mix.

This makes sense as looks like DL is making SEA a major west coast hub - looking to hugely increase number of gates it operates out of there:

Is there an actual risk that BA will cut YYC-LHR? I thought someone posted stats recently showing that loads were good.

Well the other important metric is yields. High load factor doesn't get you anything if you're selling every seat at a loss.

More recently, information has been posted suggesting BA will add a YEG tag to YYC service, alternate current service with YEG, alternate LHR-YEG-YYC and LHR-YYC-YEG, or exit the market all together. The bit of equipment juggling they've done supports these hypotheses. FI to YEG and the impending KL YEG and AF YVR services don't help either.

With 29% cost improvement is based on cost per available seat mile. However, AC is getting 251 seats out of their 788 while BA is only getting 212 seats out of the same airplane. So AC CASM is a lot less than BA due to densification of the aircraft.

The AC configuration mentioned in the quote is only used in 6 aircraft. These aircraft were late arrivals to the fleet and came with crew bunks in the back end of the airplane. These airframes were deployed onto YYZ-TLV, YVR-PEK/PVG/ICN the longer routes where multiple pilot crews are warranted. Normal AC configuration for 763 is 212 seats.

BA and AC cost per plane trip are the same for the 788. Same fuel consumption, same crew costs, etc.

The difference is AC makes 176,508 more widgets (seat miles) than BA does. This because AC has 14 fewer business class seats and 4 fewer premium economy seats but 40 more economy seats.

If BA were to leave the market how do you see AC responding/taking advantage? Is it possible for another industry player to come in?

I think not much would change with regards to YYC-LHR. AC will probably keep the 77W on the route in the summer and maybe, just maybe we'd get the 77L over the winter (like the FRA route right now).

I think it would definitely stay A333 over the winter as opposed to the B763, but in the grand scheme, BA's exit would only make WS's LGW flight more viable 'when' they start flying there in spring '16...

You're probably right about it going A333 over the winter, but I can always dream of 2 daily 77L's in YYC right?

Thinking about it right now it has been MONTHS since I've seen an AC 333 in YYC.

I like WS but I wouldn't see this as a replacement flight, it would still be a loss. Just going from LHR to LGW is a bit of a downgrade.

I hope we don't lose BA (again). I would rather AC downgauge LHR & FRA to 763/333 and KLM back to 332/333. If they leave now they may not be back again until well into the 2020's

Towards the end of Jan 2015, both AC 850 and 844 switching to 333's for few months.

As Cage explained to me, The J-heavy 77L can lift a tonne and a half more cargo but is only 4 net seats of an upguage vs 333... 42J/228Y vs 37J/228Y. I've since realized the current YYC 77L service isn't particularly anomalous given the relative underutilization of all 6 frames at the moment, if her massive 9,000 nm range is the metric: YYC-FRA, YYZ-LAX, YYZ-FRA, YYZ-GRU, YYZ-HND are the current 77L routes. All of this is due in part to the 77W's new (somewhat temporarily so) capability for AC to fly missions that were typically 77L: YVR-SYD, YYZ-HKG, and YYZ-PVG.

AC's widebody juggle game is a fun study, and it'll be even more fun to see how it all shakes out once 789 and reconfigured 777 start arriving.

According to some insider DL guy on airliners.net YYC-SEA is going to 3 daily CR7s. Cannot see any scheds yet but I bet they will be adding a mid-late afternoon flight.

I'm actually surprised they haven't added YEG yet but instead boosting YYC. Maybe in a future round of adds as I am sure they ain't finished yet at SEA!

AS seems to be pulling back a bit more... Back to 3 daily (as the scheds show now anyway).
