With the growing list of things to do in the winter (people are finally starting to realize we have to embrace it) and the city finally starting to piggyback off of Churchill visitors, it's only going to continue to grow.
That right there could be the new Winnipeg tourism slogan. I'm picturing shots of the new CMHR and Journey to Churchill and the older ones of the Nonsuch/Forks/Lower Fort Garry. Show the Bombers and Goldeyes and finish with a skyline shot.

WINNIPEG: Do Something Different

Market this to the states and Canada. We know we're not top of mind when it comes to vacation planning but if we start opening a few eyes we might find a few new people exploring this great city.

Just a thought

Travelling to another city to watch third-rate sports teams certainly is different.

If your clients are getting lost somewhere on a half-block stretch, that may explain why they're clients of yours. Did they get lost on the way to the bank or the tanning salon?

And the MTS centre is just a corporate welfare scheme at the expense of everybody else. Tell me more about its place in society.
Yeah whatever, you are rude, ignorant & you are more than lacking subtlety.. facts and figures? I guess you can not count for example.. for your Info, Osborne Village is a half dozen blocks long .So this uneducated comment tells me more about you than I care to know. clients of mine? You have no idea who they are and why they see me. bullies like you are tiresome. My clients and I have more sophistication in our toes than in your entire body and if you have a soul?
Here's a fact and figure of yours "Nobody is coming to do things downtown. Nobody? Really? nobody in English means Zero last I checked!
So, lacking mathematic skills and culture!
There are fabulous places to shop in Osborne Village (as in many areas near and in downtown) for both new items such as clothing, accessories as well as for the home and vintage items as well as antiques etc. Interesting architecture and parks and homes nearby..
I guess no Boston Pizza there for you to appreciate?
Your attitude is quite twisted and dismissive. I guess brewskies for you.

Fine, I'm wrong. Everybody's wrong. Everybody's miscalculating and misconstruing the value of Winnipeg's burgeoning tourism sector.

Did you let the Aspers know about your customers before they shelved their plans for a hotel and Portage and Main and sold the lot instead?

The market isn't lying to everybody. I appreciate the optimism and I don't doubt there are a few people out there looking to go somewhere random, but it's simply not a realistic assessment of the Winnipeg market. You aren't going to sustain a winter tourism industry on the Festival Du Voyageur and an ice trail that lasts one month a year.

This must be why Osborne Village is such a highly sought tourism destination.

Interesting but I am not sure about tourism. I am not so sure people desire to go someplace where they will be uncomfortably cold. There are a few Americans who still percieve that we live in igloos. The fact is there are some nice neighborhoods in town but whatever we have, others have in a grander scale. If would be very difficult to sell corydon street when a potential tourist has already googled robson street in vancouver. The rivers are the key I believe. The riverbank property would need to bought out and completely stabilized and developed. Something like the riverwalk in San antonio.

Why would anyone from the US (or anywhere else for that matter) come here, 13% sales tax, $5.00+ gallon gas, hassle of a passport which most Americans don't have, third world highways from the US/Canada border into Winnipeg, overpriced retail, archaic liquor laws with obscene liquor prices, high probability of having vehicle broken into or vandalized.....

No it won't, it'll be fine. People are adults for the most part. What they read here isn't somehow running counter to the reality they experience on a day-to-day basis.

If they stop coming here it's because we don't have any new projects to talk about. And we haven't in a while. So we end up having discussions on a lot of topics that don't involve directly involve construction because we're always seemingly explaining a lack of it...

Yeah no kidding, are we suppose to gush over a new three story condo on Sherbrook or debate what colour the panels are on a new parking garage. Unfortunately this isn't Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver or Regina where a multitude of projects can be discussed.

Actually I find it works in reverse.

Even though some posters here are just being realistic in some cases and base their posts on facts, figures or personal work related experience, a chorus of crying and moaning about the sad state of affairs here in comparison to other Canadian jurisdictions attracts them like flies to —. It unites them and emboldens their solidarity increasing posts, page views and new members joining the chorus. Misery loves company.

I'm being a might bit negative. I'll move on .

The fastest way to get people to leave here would be to stop this kind of conversation.

This forum may have started off as a place to talk about pretty buildings but sadly Winnipeg doesn't have all that much to talk about in any given year.

I love seeing debate about the state of Winnipeg, everyone here is clearly very passionate about the city. And the debate is not always going to be positive for a city in the state that Winnipeg is in...

As long as the personal attacks are kept to a minimum this should keep on going like it has been!

Perhaps my luck has just been bad this year. I do now work right between APTN and Portage Place which has resulted in me hearing that a lot more, and seeing a lot more homeless people fight.

The majority of whom won't leave their county in their lifetimes, let alone the country.

Speaking of the parking garage, I am surprised it does not offer fully enclosed and secured parking for residents of Glass House. That could make selling those units slightly more challenging. This could be compounded if buyers realize the type of issues they may run into in the parkade, ie what happens at the nearby Smith St parkade.

Is this known for being a particularly troublesome parkade? I mean, it would stand to reason, I guess...

The Smith St parkade is lightly staffed at best. Its close proximity to the Marlborough Hotel also seems to bring similar issues to the location. Loitering in the parkade and stairwell (before it was secure) is a common occurrence. The location is also well known to the Downtown Watch and Police Cadets as they are frequently called to assist with issues.

Broken glass from vehicle break-ins is also not at all uncommon at that location but I have no information to indicate if that is different than other similar locations downtown. It is also not uncommon to find the control arms at the entrance or exit of the lot broken.

All that said, imagine you paid around $40,000 to own a spot in the Glass House parkade and were facing similar issues. The closest secure, heated, fully enclosed lot to the Glass House is two blocks away and then you are facing a monthly fee. There are few good alternatives unless you don't own your own vehicle.

I drive by there daily on my way home and i would guess-timate 75% of the time I see "folks" blocking the entrance with their hands out looking for $.
