The biggest buildings are pretty nice, but all the small stuff from the 60's and 70's is just plain ugly!

I get excited when I see those parking lots as I know they will be developed some day (some of them right away) lots of potential there for sure.

I like lots of Calgary's smaller filler towers. It's the taller ones I'm more iffy about. Those curved rooves look wrong to me, and that silver and gold pair look a bit awkward (if they were proper twins that would improve them, but still they wouldn't be my faves).

I like curved roofs and more different shapes. HAving a skyline of flat roofed buildings makes it look boring to me.

By the Silver and Gold ones, do you mean Bankers Hall? Those are some of my favourite buildings in the country, love that 80's postmodernism!

I can't decide if it's more SimCity or Pokemon. But they are interesting.

I like different shapes, but for some reason those curved things Calgary seems to like just don't appeal to me.

I think the main issues are:
a) they almost match, so it bothers me
b) I don't think the silver works with the colour scheme
c) I don't really like the overall colour even with the gold

They aren't horrible, just they aren't for me.

I like the over all shape of Calgary's skyline, and most of the buildings, but a few of the newer ones seem to be trying to get too much attention. I'm not fond of divas.

These buildings were phased, so while they were both designed in the mid to late 80's (the first tower was finished in '89 I believe) they knew it would be a long time between the 2 towers, so the architect decided to go with different colour pallates as they were unsure the materials used on the first tower would still be available (mostly the granite cladding I think) in 10 or so years. I really like that they are just a bit different from eachother, I find it helps them compliment each other. I love the giant oversized windows and how one has a pointed top while the other has the arch.

To each their own I guess.

I'm fine with a lot of the office towers from the '60s and '70s. Most of the residential towers and hotels from that period, however, are godawful.

It's the low - midrise filler in this picture that I don't like. Just cheap buildings that went up quickly with barely a thought given to aesthetics.

My french friend from Rouen came to visit Québec city 2 weeks ago and he did that awesome video following A440 along the St-Lawrence to downtown while I was driving . Be sure to Watch full screen and HD

We have an eye on our skyline for a long time.

Video Link

A440 is awesome when weather is nice, hence it can be closed anytime in winter during a snow storm.

I noticed this detail on Bankers Hall for the first time a couple days ago:

DSC01201 by bitumin, on Flickr

Note the stepped shadowed look of the windows on the left face - the right half windows are all inset and the left half are flush.

I really am impressed with Winnipeg because you can really see the history of the city and its importance based on its architecture. It is too bad it never was able to become the city it was destined to be.
