For the same reasons, St. John's is tie with Vancouver (this judging on pictures evidence, since I've never been to eiher). Quebec City is very nice too.

There were only a handful of major cities in the world where the natural setting floored me, and mostly it was not just the natural setting but the "metropolitannness" of the buildings in the foreground and how they juxtaposed with such a primal landscape.

The example I can think of off the top of my head is Edinburgh, which has Arthur's Seat, which looks like a giant iceberg, looming over a city of gothic spires and a carpet of solid Victorian tenements. I remember coming out of the train station and thinking "wow!"

Not to be a homer, but Vancouver is the only city in North America that has that effect on me. There are cities with more arresting backdrops, but they don't have the metropolitan architecture to go with it. Case in point: Vancouver is beautiful, but Squamish occupies an even more dramatic natural setting. Of course, the buildings in Squamish are garbage, so that doesn't matter.

I suppose St. John's would have this effect on me in places, but I've never been. Quebec City has the metropolitan architecture, but the natural setting - while nice - is not as raw and primal as Vancouver's. Ditto San Francisco (great metropolitan architecture; natural setting good, but not great).

Ediburgh is the only Western city that has that Valetta (sp?) Malta style of... being born from the earth it's in. It requires a fairly homogenous city, architecturally, but the effect is mesmerizing. And Edinburgh definitely had it.

Ya, I think Toronto's situation is undervalued but that was because Torontonians themselves undervalued it. It's only recently that Torontonians are embracing their waterfront.

On a side note..........I know it's convenient but I wish to hell they would close Billy Bishop.

That middle pic actually makes Toronto look like a pancake. Flat, and then it ends.

If you look at the towers in the middle pic you can actually see pretty easily how the elevation gradually climbs. There are no sudden jumps, just a gradual climb upwards.

I was talking about the coastline there though. I just thought it was funny that at that angle the bluff made it look like a pancake.

Valetta (Malta) is a Western city.

Meh... I suppose. Should've said northwestern, I guess. I definitely lump Malta in more with southeastern Europe, Turkey, Balkans, Levant, etc.

The Toronto skyline changes by the day, giving urban enthusiasts a unique way of dating photographs of the city. In today's Photo of the Day, which was submitted to the UrbanToronto Flickr Pool by Empty Quarter, the changes are subtle. Judging by the height of the Bay Adelaide Centre's east tower and the work under way on the taller tower at ICE Condos, it is safe to say that this photo was taken in mid to late-June.

And they're talking about expanding it!

No way in hell it's closing having had so much money put into the tunnel-then-bridge-then-tunnel going to it.

I know. I hesitated before posting that many, but I figured it was better to have the bunch in one block instead of separated. Still, I know it´s a lot and I would not do that too often. In any case, this thread has such traffic that this page will be past news before the end of the day,

I'd have broken it up myself. I started going into sensory overload about a third of the way in. Simply couldn't handle such an assault of beauty.

Two many photos of Montreal at one go, but you get a pass, because...Montreal. No other city could get away with it.

I don't think there's any question that it's solidly the second best skyline in the country. With Vancouver at #3, you've got a 1-2-3 skyline ranking in Canada that makes sense. After those three the rankings from 4 to 10 can go in any order you like, because really, who cares?

We've got three great skylines in this country that you could proudly put up in any international scenario. Which is cool for a country of 35 million. You can't really ask for more.
