I've been keeping track of the roadheaders on the website (http://www.confederationline.ca/en/the-build/downtown-tunnel/roadheaders/) where they show how much each one has excavated. Crocodile Rouge is really flying, it got 48 metres excavated last week alone! Normally they average 20-25 metres per week. It's on track to start excavating Rideau Station by the holidays. On the other side, Lyon station excavation looks like it will be done around January or February. At that point, Jawbreaker will technically be done its work... but I imagine it will move east to help out Chewrocka with Parliament station. (Chewrocka was pulled out of Parliament to help with Lyon, so it's clearly possible to do that).

Jawbraker and Chewrocka are digging Lyon from two opposite directions, J digging towards the east, C digging towards the west, and will meet in the middle. I don't think they can work side by side, but I could be wrong.

I could never understand why they had Chewrocka stop it's work on Parliament to help with Lyon. Seems counter productive.

This is just a completely random guess on my part.... how about:
- Jawbreaker is working full speed on Lyon station
- Chewrocka drills just the tunnel to Lyon, but didn't really get much done on Parliament Station
- Once broken through, Chewrocka hightails it back to work on the tunnel from Parliament to Rideau
- Jawbreaker finishes Lyon Station, then moves to work on Parliament Station.

That way, crews can start on the next phase of Lyon station, while still making efficient use of all roadheaders...

^ Makes sense. May also have something to do with compensating for the pause that Crocodile Rouge had from that sinkhole.

Another reason could relate to removal of spoil: once the tunnel exists from the west portal all the way to Parliament, any further spoil from east of Parliament can be removed via the tunnel itself through the west portal rather than up the central shaft.

It has got to be more time consuming, costly and disruptive to remove spoil from the middle of downtown Ottawa up a shaft than from LeBreton Flats on the level.

Wasn't the underground portion one of the first scheduled to be complete? I imagine they wouldn't be overly concerned with the schedule since there is already a healthy buffer in place.

^ Depends on the exact nature of the P3 contract. P3 contracts often include harsh penalties for delays and rewards for completing early. RTG may be moving quickly in hopes of securing an early opening (perhaps in April 2018 or January 2018 instead of the scheduled May) for a reward, or perhaps for good PR to win a Phase 2 contract.

Sad, but true... and a slightly cutesier suburban design, too, instead of an urban one.

Why does no one know how to design a city any more?

Why do we keep getting saddled with suburban crap, even in relatively central locations?

Maybe Chewrocka can then backtrack and rough-in a future Confederation Square station, just for kicks.

Isnt that just a fanciful wish, but I am sure alot of us would agree, for a north south subway... or to add in other east west lines, or lines from Gatineau.

Does anyone know how the cost of tunneling breaks down?

I am thinking the station caverns are the most expensive piece. Or the shot-creting.

Is the actual roadheader digging relatively inexpensive?

I am just trying to understand what would drive the costs of:
1. A Sandy hill Truck tunnel
2. A Montreal/Rideau/Bank tunnel

It's sad what has happened to public transportation in Canada and the USA. Most cities (even cities as small as Cornwall, ON) had comprehensive light rail networks:

http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~wyatt/streetcar-list.html

Because of the GM streetcar scandal, all the tracks were removed in favour of buses whereas Europe and Asia largely updated their rail transit instead and now have the greatest transit systems in the world. Here is what Ottawa's street car network looked like in 1948, imagine what the city would look like now if these tracks were upgraded instead of trashed:

As much as I wish we still had tracks running through Ottawa, I do have to point out that the streetcar had become pretty dysfunctional: before autodom, they were the masters of the road, moving quickly with few obstacles, much like SLRT today. Once the automobile become widespread, the streetcar became bogged down and subject to frustrating delays because of turning or idle cars. In Toronto, I find the streetcar charming, but it's incredibly frustrating when you actually want to get somewhere.

However, the course of action should have been to give streetcar their own right-of-way instead of ripping up the tracks and some lines which already had their own RoW(like to Britannia and Aylmer) should have been kept in operation.

No more frustrating than on a bus, and a hell of a lot smoother ride.

Is there anywhere where the bus drivers are more clutz-footed, and unaware that they are driving a bus full of passengers, many of whom are standing, than Ottawa?

I would say Thunder Bay has a fair number of drivers who are worse.

The ride is indeed smooth as a baby's bottom. But I had to take the streetcar to catch a train (because the subway opens at 9am (!) on Sundays) and having to wait for every jaydriver and the very slow turning made it arguably more frustrating than a bus.

But riding on St Clair or Spadina was a dream
