^ I'm a little confused as to why neither Hurdman Station nor the Scott-Albert bus detour (both of which are U/C) are never mentioned in the construction updates. I'm going to email the Rail Implementation Office about it tomorrow.

Question about Hurdman if anyone knows. Construction is to begin Feb 2015 and completed June 2016. Will the new station be directly beside where the current bus station is because I'm assuming buses will still be running through the current Hurdman in Feb 2015. When will the transitway be closed east of downtown for rail implementation? Thanks all!

Don't know for sure, but construction on Lees and uOttawa stations is starting in May 2016.

Once Highway 417 is completed in fall 2015, buses will be diverted to the highway so that construction of the guideway may begin.

The new Hurdman station will be located just north of the current platforms - preliminary works for storm and sanitary sewers as well as structures are underway.

Yep, the new Hurdman rail station will be further north than the existing Hurdman bus station. The Confederation Line is using a slightly different route from the current Transitway that cuts further north to reduce curvature--this also has the convenience of allowing the existing Hurdman station to operate unmolested all through construction right up to opening. Presumably the Transitway station will be demolished after the Confederation Line opens (a new bus loop for the Southeast Transitway is going to be built as part of the station to offer integrated transfers like those in Toronto, so the current station won't be used anymore).

Wouldn't there still be (a small number of) bus-to-bus transfers here?

I believe those would be happening within the bus loop. Likely there would be access to the loop from both Industrial/Riverside and from the Southeast Transitway.

What is the purpose of putting Hurdman on pillars, rather than in a trench?

I mean can anyone explain the rationale of going all the way up from Lees... only to go all the way down again for the Train Station?

It has to go up over Riverside anyway. The ground level concourse is very efficient for a bus transfer hub, all passengers have to do is descend one level to catch a connection. An at grade station would have pedestrian tunnels or bridges to cross the track with double sets of stair/escalators, and an underground station would have been impractical.

The area is also former landfill and contaminated rail yards, so digging would probably require tonnes of costly soil remediation, too.

That's right, I don't have a link, but this was one of the cited reasons when the plan for hurdman was originally announced.

14000 pixels of "The Trainyards"

I decided to leave this aerial pano full size on flickr. Took a while to upload. Lucky thing they got rid of the streetcars or it would be called The Tramyards. No cheating.

ottawa trainyards by southfacing, on Flickr

Considering it's been a year since the variable message signs were installed, it will be interesting to see what kind of time frame "operational imminently" refers to in the construction update!

Up from Lees, or only slightly down from the elevation of the bridge over the river?

Also, I'd imagine there are water-table issues in this area as well.

What a hideously ugly piece of crap Trainyards is. Why does the City of Ottawa approve so many pieces of crap?

But...there's *green* between Walmart and the CP parking lot. And it has a path. Can't ask for more than that.

Soon we will have Cfb Rockcliffe as the biggest lost opportunity. No transit...
