Love it or hate it, but the views from the top are very nice.

I am actually in peace with this tower and it has its sides.

And it also has other sides too, the sides visible from David Lam Park, the seawall and the entire False Creek area. You know, these sides:

Yeah, we have seen those construction-time photo, but nobody will ever see this building like that now that it has been completed, as there are always dozens of blinds randomly drawn. The Mark will also be hidden from east by The Charleson and the other tower to the north, so the issue is (despite horrible) not going to be visible.

As such I am personally pretty satisfied with The Mark. It is not a landmark building, but it doesn't even have to be as there will be taller and more prominent buildings in the immediate area taking all the attention. As infill The Mark is totally fine.

Unfortunately, the blinds don't substantially mitigate the visibility of the ridiculous spandrel at the top, as you claim. It is still easy to distinguish between the blinds and the ridiculous spandrel. If you don't exclude those sides from your photoset next time, it will be apparent. Furthermore, the two towers you mention (one of which will be built by the exact same company that gave us this building) will only block the sight of The Mark from a couple of vantage points, leaving hundreds of other prominent vantage points all around the north and south sides of False Creek. Moreover, what does it say about the quality of a building when blocking the sight of it by other buildings is considered a positive?

Please be fair to Klazu, as he has the right to his opinion.
I personally think the building is slightly improved now that it's completed, and by the random use of blinds, but I hope we never get anything like it built again.
It's background 'filler' at the best of times, I think.
However, it's not unreasonable for the building not to irritate the socks of Klazu!

So, I am denying poor Klazu's right to his opinion and being unfair to him by exercising my right to have a contrary opinion (and expressing it in a civil manner)?

Oh my lord.

Lighten up. There's no need to be a — to someone for something as petty as their opinion on the appearance of a building.

Klazu is one of the greatest contributers on these forums, so just take a chill pill, have a little respect.

In the future, you might want to actually read the thread before commenting on it. Just a suggestion.

I don't know what makes you think I didn't read the thread... but my point still stands.

This place is like a comedy goldmine sometimes. The ability for conflict to happen over literally nothing is both juvenile and mind-blowingly funny (in my opinion).

Just to kind of stay on topic I think the mark is a bit of a turd, but I do respect the fact that others may have a different opinion.

How exactly was Prometheus being a — to Klazu? I don't understand how people can become so hostile and critical to others when people express an opinion that they don't fully agree with. Klazu stated his reasons for why the Mark isn't a complete failure to the Vancouver Skyline and Premotheus shared his views on why he thinks it still is. I don't see anything wrong with that... Its called a "discussion" which is exactly what this forum is for. Just my two cents on what I'm observing and seems to be a trend on this forum.

BTW, I really appreciate all the photos and updates that people are contributing to these message boards, and big shout out to Klazu for the frequent and high quality photos! I don't go downtown very often so its nice to be able to keep up with all the construction that's been going on.

I am not hurt about this little incident, so worry not. And we are all now aware that Prometheus is very upset with how The Mark turned out and that is completely justified. I am totally with him that such spandrel mess should be disallowed and sanctioned by the city, but at the same time I am happy that the destruction is at least not very visible after completion. Like said, I am in peace with this building.

Wow, this has been like an episode of the Twilight Zone (starting at post #547), which is hopefully over now.

I'm sorry everyone. I didn't mean for this to become such a debacle. I just find that unecessary and excessive use of a sarcastic tone to be not the politest way to go about having a discussion. I'm not saying you shouldn't speak your opinion, by any mean.

^That's funny because I read the past dozen posts or so and didn't see any "debacle", far from it, all I read were a couple of guys mild-manneredly disagreeing about a building. I'd say a debacle is when guys go, "— YOU YA — GOOF!!!" and i saw nothing anything close to that but I guess we all have our own ideas about what constitutes a fight.

As far as the building goes, I think the name, "The Mark" is fitting since it means "target" and this building has definitely been the target of a lot of criticism. There are many here who seem obsessed with spandrel, they go on about spandrel this and spandrel that as though it is a sign of the coming apocalypse. Since they custom built the top few floors I agree that it looks a little odd but how many people outside of our little architectural nerddom are going to even notice, let alone care? Not many i suspect since there are so many high-rises in Yaletown now i doubt that most even look up at the buildings anymore.

For me, what is so disappointing about the Mark is not only the spandrelly hodge-podge, at the top,
but even more, that big war bunker that greets us as we drive into the city from the south.
And ironically, so much fanfare was made of this building when first announced ......
