Those are all great suggestion Scottharding for ways for Trolley Square to increase it's presence in the neighborhood.

DM and Projects, I think you are both onto something, DM with accessing 500 W through that corridor, and Projects with a bowling alley. Not a Allstar lanes bowling alley, but more like a Jupiter bowl type bowling alley. A bowling alley that is just a much a restaurant and bar as it is a bowling alley. Orient the entire front/restaurant area of the bowling alley along the newly opened up corridor including 500 W and the Olympic Plaza, then have the lanes go south from that point.

Something like that will attract downtown residents and others on a regular basis. Combine that with another bar or two along Rio Grande St, keep the restaurants, and theaters, add some neighborhood retail options and you suddenly have a destination for the Gateway neighborhood residents, downtown residents.

Something along these basic lines. Red = restaurant area Yellow = Bowling lanes.

I am telling you. You want people there. Put in a Gold's gym. That will bring people. That will also bring tanning, and other fitness related things to that area. There is no gym close. you also desperately need a grocery store. I love latino markets, but I know they aren't for everyone, and the closest grocery stores is the Smith's on 600 N and 1100 west, and the Harmon's downtown. I am also down with the Bowling. Downtown Denver had a really nice one, on that 4th street mile shopping center area. It was beautiful

The fas Lodge is moving really really fast. I couldn't get pics but it looked like framing was about 2 floors up.

Though most of the proscenium and box seats have been completely removed, Im thinking these elements of the old Utah/Pantages theater could be recreated. Even if the box seats aren't as voluptuous as what they once were, something more simple like this would be satisfactory IMO:

Current condition of the old Utah/Pantages theater on Main Street:

What existed before Paramount bought the theater and split the house in two:

Quote:
"We have been thinking and working all along to have a development of both [upac & utah/pantages]," Mayor Ralph Becker says.

City Councilman Luke Garrott, who heads the board of the city's Redevelopment Agency (which bought the Utah Theatre from Howa in 2009), says building a Broadway-style theater downtown would be a major change to the city's arts scene, and "it would be a real crying shame not to have the Utah Theatre to be a part of that."

"It's very clear to me," Garrott says, "that the only way we're going to restore the Utah Theatre is part of the funding package for the Broadway theater. I can't see it falling out of that basket."

Anyone know how this is working out? Did it "fall out of the basket?" I haven't heard anything about the Utah/Pantages theater recently.

So, mountain accord released a document and survey today. I don't know how to access it but i did want to point out one of the more interesting parts, which is that mountain accord is considering building rail in a loop up parleys through PC and back down Lcwc

I just saw a building permit come in for a multi-family residential building at 252 S. 500 E. The one story building currently on the site was owned by the Salvation Army. I think the University of Utah is using it right now. It is 2 levels of parking and 5 levels of housing. I haven't seen elevations as of yet.

That would be awesome. I've responded there before. That is a long property. I believe there is also a mens rehab on the back part of it.

This has me tentatively excited. What kind of rail? Commuter? What is Lcwc?

This is a coulda woulda shoulda, but I wish they would have considered building this rail loop before UTA built the sugar house streetcar going down the most obvious rail corridor connecting front runner to parleys canyon. They could have actually built the "streetcar" going down a street.

Perhaps there's still room down this corridor for an additional line? I guess they could always go double decker.

It appears that the rail option was for the ideal situation the transportation team picked. I would support a Foothill / I-215 line serving as the backbone of a mountain rail transit system accompanied by BRT that runs in separate lanes / Streetrunning in Foothill drive but shares stations, with the BRT acting as a future supplement. Then, there would presumably be stations at freeway interchanges (fashion Blvd, Union Park, somewhere around 21st east, the 62nd Wasatch PNR, 5300, 4500, 3900, 3300, parleys) and on major roads on Foothill (parleys, 2100, 1300/Anderson, Research Park, 1700 E.) that serve as the backbone of a mountain transportation system serving the mountains in local (trailheads) and express format with BRT lanes everywhere possible (not the cottonwoods, unless severe traffic restrictions go in and transit and pedestrian become the primary mods of access which I think is a great idea)

Edit : So I have drawn up a simple concept, with a line that runs up south campus to the traffic circle (above or below grade so as not to make the traffic circle any worse than it already is) to campus center and up foothill to I-215, and around 215 to the fashion place west station. There is a branch off of old mill that heads along Wasatch boulevard to the mouth of LCWC. There is BRT running up parleys canyon in the center or maybe outside of I-80 to park city and deer valley. There is a BRT system running up both LCWC and BCWC, where the roads are closed at 7am eastbound until 9pm (so any WB traffic can continue) except to maintenance vehicles and people that live in the canyons and work in the canyons and ped/bike/motorcycle, etc and the BRT buses, which run as custom articulated vehicles with special winter equipment and an extra powerful engine. They would hopefully run almost every 2 minutes during peak times (which would be the opposite of regular peak times - UTA will probably overlook this). There is also a bus running less frequently up Emigration Canyon and Millcreek Canyon that do not operate in BRT format. The bus to PC makes many less stops than the CWC busses (which have both local and express to serve the resorts for everyone and the trailheads for people that do not) because of the lack of trails in parleys. There is also a busway from the east end of BCWC to LCWC that was planned in some of the ideal projects.

Rail

What is a tragic comedy is that Utah was once full of existing rail-routes that are now being evaluated to be re-railed. The infrastructure was destroyed by myopic dissidents who believed that the automobile would triumph above all, indefinitely. Could have saved a bundle of money by keeping the routes in tact. Live and learn I suppose.

Colorado Resort Sues Over Salt Lake Ski Marketing

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/colorado-resort-sues-salt-lake-ski-marketing-26053313

Quote:
Steamboat Ski Resort is suing Utah tourism officials, claiming a $1.8 million campaign designed to lure tourists in the lucrative winter sports industry away from Colorado violates their Ski Town, U.S.A. trademark.

"They're trying to leverage the value we worked hard to create for their own commercial benefit," resort spokesman Rob Perlman said.

Visit Salt Lake contends that the Ski City campaign doesn't violate the Ski Town trademark because it promotes a different, more urban ski vacation experience.

"Ski City USA celebrates and promotes the fact that there is a distinct alternative to the 'ski town' experience," said Shawn Stinson, a spokesman for Visit Salt Lake, in a statement.

The campaign's website carries the tagline: "Once you've stayed in Ski City, you'll never stay in another ski town."

The package of online and print ads emblazoned with the new Ski City logo was announced last month in a press conference that featured local elected officials, tourism authorities and ski resort executives.

The name is designed to tout the Salt Lake area's restaurants, bars and night life a short drive from four resorts: Alta Ski Area, Brighton Resort, Snowbird Ski Resort and Solitude Mountain Resort.

The trademark infringement suit filed in Denver by the Steamboat Ski Resort and Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club names those four Utah resorts and Visit Salt Lake.

The lawsuit asks a federal judge to stop Salt Lake from using the Ski City brand and seeks unspecified damages and any profits they make from the name.
