Perhaps this isn't the place to ask, but considering the recent discussion about potqash prices being down, I was wondering why the government of Saskatchewan hasn't started allowing the exploitation of the Bakken oil formation in the southeast of the province like North Dakota has. Surely it would been a boon for the province.

The Bakken oil formation is being exploited, and has been for several years now.

Look, after reading the incessant cheerleading on this site, a reality check is needed.

Everytime someone posts an excited news tidbit about some new development, thats another cog in the collapse. A flurry of building activity is not a sign of a robust economy, its the sign of an artificial boom transitioning to bust and its going to happen here...again. Just like it did in 1980-82 and 1991.

The housing market has already taken it in the chin and resources are next in line starting with oil and potash and ag commodities. The employment being created in this city is all retail TF workers and construction. 20 somethings with $500k houses, $200k condos overlooking the empire offsale. There are no masses of engineers or IT people or head offices moving here. The GTH is just a staging area, nothing is manufactured there. Its all junk coming back from China. For every new 'chain' store somebody gets excited about, others are closing. Walk into the northgate or vic square ghost mall. On top of that I can tell you that the city has mismanaged this cycle and will pay the price. Instead of squaring their liabilities and service problems, they chose to build a $300 million stadium for our drunks to go to.

Maybe some of you aren't old enough or educated enough to recognize a fading business cycle, but at the end of the day Sask is a one trick commodities pony who will always ride that cycle.

So instead of getting a HO for the next development, dig a little deeper and recognize what you are really witnessing.

That's funny because the siding and decking company i work for has so many back log orders that we have to stop taking work as we have too much. Housing boom done? I think not, just slow this year like Saskatoon was last year and now there back at full speed. Who ever you are plz take these kind words and leave. SK is moving ahead after many years of falling behind...

Hey genius, the city of regina is several hundred million dollars in the pension red for its employees and you think a stadium is a good investment. Its easier and safer and cheaper for you to just get drunk in your basement.

Now they will have to apply an extra stealth tax to every house in the city to make up the shortfall. People without pensions paying for other peoples pensions.

And wow siding orders are the 'bell weather indicator' for the economy. You think housing has big upside? Then put your money out there and go buy 10 houses. You will be a multi-millionaire in 5 years.

The average resale of houses is dropping like a stone and so are the construction starts. Any fool can see it if they drive around. Half the activity of last year. And in 2015 when rates rise, we will see what the young and indebted are made of and if they still believe this is the next silicon valley here.

anyone know what's happening to 1942 Hamilton Street (old Vital Stats office, I believe - between Olivers & Siam)?

They've taken out all of the windows, opened it up to grade, and have tarped an area about 5-6' back from the front wall of the building. Could be installation of floor-to-ceiling windows (for retail or an office), or the creation of a small patio set into the building like Atlantis/Flip (for a restaurant).

REGINA — Harbour Landing has unsold lots, but Dream Development is already digging — literally — into its next mega project.

“We’re essentially done in Harbour Landing,” said Dream’s general manager Paul Moroz, who expects the 200 remaining lots to sell in less than a year.

Now, the company has its sights on a Harbour Landing 2.0.

West Harbour Landing is a proposed 587-hectare tract of land that will eventually house more than 25,000 residents. By comparison, Harbour Landing proper is 320 hectares.

The city is in the process of evaluating a neighbourhood plan for the entire area, of which 120 hectares have been approved for development under the city’s 300,000-resident plan for growth.

Located between Harbour Landing and Courtney Street, north of the Trans-Canada Highway and south of the airport, the community will eventually feature parks, neighbourhood hubs, and one or more schools. Moroz said it will be based on a pre-war-style grid system rather than the “loops and lollipops” of cul-de-sacs and crescents that have been popular in new developments of late.
