One Bloor is turning out to be one of the best in the country as well.

A larger and less cropped version of one of my favorite views of the skyline...

One Bloor is turning out to be amazing . It'll be an icon. Too bad (like Aura) it'll be invisible from the classic lake view.

3. Calgary

densely packed, huge commercial towers dominating surrounding residential point towers and mid rises. Massive from some angles; rather small from others. The Bow tower impresses greatly and several others are quite pleasing but, lacking compared to others with older more established skylines.

4. Montreal

large with good character with some top notch towers. Needs more height. The current crop of 400+ footers under construction could propel it to 3rd.
Nice summary WS.
Regarding the portion I bolded I'm wondering if by the same token the crop of 800, 700, & 500 footers under construction in Calgary could propel it to 2nd ?

My thoughts exactly.
If there's one thing that this thread shows, it's that the word "obviously" is obviously out of place in that initial quote.

Im really not trying to start anything, but other than the old architecture, what is so great about Montreals skyline? The tallest towers are ugly, and if the skyline were in any other city in Canada, it wouldnt make top 4. Montreal is a great city, the best in Canada (most would argue) but the skyline is mediocre at best

Hey, let's not throw gas on a dying inferno. That's obviously not what this forum needs.

Edmonton's skyline will see a major improvement over the next 10 years, with Stantec (likely to be tallest outside Toronto and Calgary) and another tower or two in the Arena District breaking through the tabletop. I don't think it will break into the top 4 but it will definitely hold a solid 5th.

Some base skylines on different criteria..Yes, Montreal is a little stale in the new tower department, but you have the throw in the bridges, Mount Royal, the church spires etc.
I personally find cities like Phoenix for example uninspiring, whereas (off the top of head) Philadelphia, much like Montreal has that great blend...Surfer's Paradise, a resort town in Australia would smoke Montreal (pardon the pun) in the height department.

m.
At least these things are cityscape and not pure topography. I don't have a problem with this.

Maybe but, Telus Sky and Brookfield are adding density and height to the tallest and densest part of the skyline. Think Toronto's CBD in 2000 which completely overshadowed the hundreds of 20 something storey towers in the rest of downtown.

Vancouver's downtown is a mass of 25 storey towers that appears as a mass of 40 or even 50 storey towers.

Few people have mentioned Mount Royal bringing lots of character to Montreal's skyline. I am curious to hear why people see it that way?

It's not really a mountain, but a small and fairly flat hill covered in forest with no prominent feature. It's just... green background, as far as I can tell. And most of the time Montreal skyline is viewed from top of it.

I've always thought that Toronto's skyline is one that looks best at night. The CN Tower is wonderful and the sheer massive size of it and large number of tall buildings can't help but impress. It's when daylight comes that it goes from a 9 to a 3 dressed up as a 9 because when the sun shines you actually get to see those towers and all those new blue glass buildings of Waterfront and Southcore blend in together in a big blob with nothing to differentiate one from the other.

Vancouver's setting is spectacular and the density is obvious but, despite some recent improvements, it uninspires. Nearly all condo towers of the same width and height. That's the problem with have such strict height and footprint rules...........development goes utilitarian, Functional but, like Vancouver itself, monotonous and lacking in character.

Montreal's I've always loved as it's skyline looks it has aged well without the McDevelopments of Toronto and Vancouver.

Calgary, though, impresses me not only for it's large size, especially considering the city's relative small size but the variety of height, design, colour, materials......Toronto would be 10X better if the last 20 years followed Calgary's diversity rather than the blue-glass sterile monotony path it choose instead. Calgary's skyline offers incredible diversity and I think if the current boom continues in 20 years Calgary will outshine Toronto in the skyline dept.

Calgary's skyline will continue it's great diversity in all aspects of design and if Toronto's skyline, if it too continues like it has for the last 20 years, will be nothing more than a bigger version of Southcore and CityPlace.
