Good news for lots of inner city areas. My neighborhood grew by 13% and school age grew by 19%!

Now. if only they'd open the school back up...

Communities in Edmonton are defined. The Downtown Edmonton Community does not include Oliver and Grandin. Grandin is part of the Oliver area of the City. If you want to informally call Grandin and or Oliver something like MidTown that would be a better descriptor.

Micro-suites part of plan for Old Strathcona redevelopment
Crawford Block to be incorporated into apartment block facing onto alley

CBC News Posted: Aug 30, 2014 11:47 AM MT Last Updated: Aug 30, 2014 11:47 AM MT

One of the oldest buildings in Old Strathcona may soon be preserved and incorporated into a larger development with micro-apartments and retail facing an alleyway.

Local company Beljan Developments has applied to have the Crawford Block, on Gateway Boulevard north of Whyte Avenue, designated as a municipal historic resource.

Along with preserving the three-storey structure built in 1912, Beljan wants to demolish a single-story addition in the back that was built in the 1950s and replace it with a five-storey, higher-density apartment block.

The newer building would house 40 micro-suites, units of about 350 square feet which are meant to house a single person without a car...

The CBD is only one part of the 5 'areas' of downtown, as defined in the Capital City Downtown Plan.

For logistic purposes, every neighbourhood has a boundary. Lots of people don't know what the definitions are, others are proud of their distinct neighbourhood identity like Oliver or Grandin. Neither are wrong.

As a league when we talk about 'downtown' we talk mostly in regards to the area that our bylaws and the plan prescribe. Until recently we had overlapping borders with other leagues but that has since been resolved.

For you community leaguers, politicians and such, that's all just policy wonk wankery. As far many people are concerned, downtown includes Oliver, Quarters, Chinatown, North Edge and maybe parts of Rossdale and McCauley.

This is an estimate for 2013 - I can't find anything for 2014, but it gives you an idea how big Edmonton's CMA may be by now.

This growth continues to amaze. The Edmonton region is turning into a beast.

Id estimate the Edmonton region close to 1,400000!

And I can attest as a small business owner who drives the Edmonton region on a daily basis that our guys and myself have noticed large leap in traffic in the last 2 years.

Come on Enbridge, up the ante and go for the win over Stantec !!
Could be a height race like Chrysler vs ESB in 1930's NYC.

Having said that I would love to see Enbridge launch 102 St. Centre.

With all the talk of Stantec, is there any chance of PCL consolidating downtown in the foreseeable future?

PCL has a small satellite office in 101st tower, but there is no reason or benefit to them consolidating space in a downtown office.

PCL is a contruction company. It likes being near its vendors and such. A fair bit of vehicle movement is required from the building so it's going to be a pain the — for the employees to do the things they need to do.

Iconic Edmonton hotel on Kingsway sold to local family firm

By Nick Lees, Edmonton JournalSeptember 1, 2014 12:06 PM

EDMONTON - A local family company has purchased the Edmonton Ramada Hotel and Conference Centre, formerly known as the Edmonton Inn.

“Nearly every Edmontonian can tell a story about the iconic Edmonton Inn,” says Aleksa Mrdjenovich, the 29-year-old president of Nova Hotels, which announced the purchase, for an undisclosed sum, on Friday.

“We plan to recapture the hotel’s landmark status and make it a major destination once again,” she continued. “Next door, we have the development of Blatchford Field, one of the largest sustainable developments in the world, and we are a short distance from the Edmonton arena district development.”...

I wish they would have made more of an investment renovating the Chateau Lacombe...but they have not. They painted, changed mattresses, updated La Ronde and stopped there. The parkade is a mess.
