60,428 in two years, to be specific.

Still, that's 3.69% per year. Holy cow.

At this rate, the City of Edmonton proper could hit the 1 million mark by as early as 2018. But I think it might take a little longer than that, since some years will be slower than others.

To put that in perspective, that works out to be:
- about 83 people per day
- about 580 people per week
- about 2,483 people per month

Of course, the above would include births, and would be net of people moving away, deaths, etc.

Very impressive numbers indeed!

^ If we go by CMA population estimates from Stats Canada (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/tables-tabl...emo05a-eng.htm), Edmonton's CMA population is estimated at 1,289,600 as of 2013.

This is an estimate for 2013 - I can't find anything for 2014, but it gives you an idea how big Edmonton's CMA may be by now.

Yes, that's crazy.

And thinking how many people choose to live in the burbs, the outliers must be growing at the same pace, or larger pace, than the city itself.

Oliver is basically an extension of Downtown. The Quarters may one day join in a "greater downtown", but for now it and the North Edge communities feel too different from Downtown. Crossing 111th into Oliver doesn't give you the sense you're in a different community the same way crossing 97th into the Quarters or 105th into the North Edge does.

Downtown's "official" boundaries are entirely arbitrary and I don't see why there can't be a bit of an open interpretation for it. Gold Bar and Fulton sometimes get lumped into a general "Capilano" definition, so what? Do you also think city propers are more indicative of a city's population than metro areas?

I always remembered when Cold was rightfully torn a new hole by the owner of Brittany's when he stated on C2E that her establishment was not part of downtown.

You know, instead of these petty arguments over what's downtown and what isn't, let's just come up with a more encompassing name, like central core or something.

I'd predict, the Capital Region has between 1,350,000 - 1,380,000 in the metro area for 2014.

Other than that dreadful car lot on 116/Jasper, Oliver feels every bit as downtown as the "true" downtown.Very urban and walkable . I don't use my car other than for out of town trips and the occasional work excursion. Don't really need it.

I have always considered Oliver and Grandin as part of downtown.
