Does the 407 have any room to expand to 14 or 16 lanes? Likely such would require a collector-express setup. I don't know any highways anywhere in North America wider than 12 lanes with a standard setup.

The 407 has a very wide ROW, but some space is reserved for a future rapid transit line. I'm not sure how much space would be available for additional lanes.

Part of the I-75 through downtown Atlanta is 7-8 lanes wide each direction (14-16 lanes total). That's the biggest (widest) single highway I've ever driven on.

I've driven on the 18-lane part of Highway 401. Very intense. Are there any highways in North America wider than that?

If the 407ETR gets any wider, I think it could be the widest toll highway in North America, possibly the world.

Given my location, I have no reason to drive the 407. It's a road to nowhere for me, unless I want to shave a few mins getting to Canada's Wonderland or something.

Does the 407 have many skyscrapers along the route? Did they sprout up in recent years? Last vid I saw of it just has power lines.

Southern York Region is intensifying at a healthy pace, so I suppose there must be some towers along the route nowadays.

That stretch of I-75 through Atlanta is a beast!

I think the 401 widening in Kitchener is actually for 10 lanes, for some reason. a 3.5km section of the 401 will go from 6 to 10 lanes, just to return to 6 lanes again.. At least for a few years until they start bringing the 10 lanes (it will eventually become 8+2HOV) eastward.
That short stretch carries a lot of local K-W - Cambridge traffic.

Yeah, I often drive from Orillia to KW and the worst spots for congestion for me are usually between Mississauga and Milton, and in Cambridge.

in terms of highrises, there are a bunch around the 404, yonge street, and downtown markham. they all max out around 20 floors though. There is essentially a 10km stretch with highrises lining the north side of the highway along there.

South side is still completely covered in hydro lines, and always will be. There is a half decent view of Scarborough when going westbound in eastern markham however, and you get a half decent look at NYCC as you pass yonge as well. Then the office parks by the 401 in Mississauga are visible.. Not nearly as impressive as the 401 (obviously), but still there in some stretches. Downtown Markham in particular is probably the most impressive now that it is starting to get built out, the highway is roughly 4 or 5 floors up as it passes it due to the stouffville GO line overpass, so you feel like you are almost looking down on the buildings.

Most of the 407 has an ultimate design width of 10 lanes, with only the section between the 400 and 427 being designed for 12. The highway is now at "ultimate buildout" between the 404 and the 427.

I believe it is the widest freeway in the world at that point. The 401 in Toronto is factually the world's busiest freeway, as well as the world's busiest truck corridor. Quite an amazing set of statistics. Woot.

400 was closed today due to an accident, again. Seems to be closed at least once a month.. Traffic havoc of course.

Toronto is by far the busiest, by almost 100,000 AADT. 427 is the third busiest as.well.

By current growth rates, isn't Stoney Trail in Calgary projected to pass Toronto's 401 volume by 2378?

Autoroute Henri-IV (A73) filmed by me today.
It's of the most important Expressway in the city linking South & north shores via the well know Pierre-Laporte Bridge
Aswell as Upper & Lower town

This filmed section has an AADT between 110 000 and 120 000 a day (2012)
It was a little over 90 000, 12 years ago.
It's pretty much often a parking lot during rush hours ....

Watch full screen & HD
