Updates from the City after DECL inquiry.

Capital BLVD
1. granite bollards being removed except at mid-block crossings
2. working with Art Council to add public art long the BLVD, late 2015 likely.

Jasper Avenue Light-poles
1. Delivery is later this year, Epcor would like to install them in the spring of 2015.

It's certainly better than their circa '97 output.

Poor decision to use them in the first place. Such a waste of material.

What's going in in their place? Without them people are parking on the sidewalk.

Calgary seems to make it work on Stephen Avenue walk with just shallow curbs.

I hope the current asphalt patches aren't permanent.

Part of the problem is that the parking meters are set back about a meter from the gutter, so people assume that they're supposed to park there. Maybe once the City goes to smart meters with one or two stations on every block that problem will solve itself.

Pedestrian volumes are so far low along most of the street so it isn't a huge issue, but it is just one more way that the design fails.

For some background, the granite bollards were 'soldiers' to line the route to the Leg.

and the biggest problem with them turned out to be that they just weren't tall enough soldiers to be seen from most vehicles (in addition to the problems with graders and plows).

The bollards along 104 St seem to work fine.

Ever noticed when you walked east of Bonnie Doon on Whyte Ave that the presence of English suddenly drops?

Does a design like this (lots of little framed boxes) have any practical use/advantages, like improved sound-proofing between units? Or is it just an aesthetic trend?
