WS tried the YHM market for years and found that GTA does not include YHM. Most of the WS traffic was western Canadians going home for cheap, there was very little traffic going west from GTA. The issue was also not due to lack of brand awareness for WS in the GTA, survey says the GTA residents were aware of WS and their flights out of YHM, but instead chose to fly out of YYZ or not fly at all.

However the big problem for WN is that if travellers want to fly out of YHM for cheap, then continuing down the road to BUF will yield $90 savings in govt taxes. To compete WN would have to lower their base fare to compensate for the US federal taxes.

Southwest is by far the best North American airline. The greater the presence in Canada, the better. It's not only price. Southwest has the best service. The check ins move faster, the staff more knowledgeable and the flights on time.

Granted airline service is like beauty, in the eye of the beholder.

Price over the past two years has been comparable between WN and the other airlines. The price difference comes down to fees for seat selection and bags (bags is the major differentiator). Also WN has lower last minute last seat fares than majors, but compare at the 21day advance purchase level and WN is about equal to legacy airlines.

The checkins move faster because WN does not interline with other airlines, flies only short and medium haul operations to a traffic that is largely either nonstop or same plane one stop service. In short their operating model is a lot less complex. The lack of operational complexity is causing them to miss revenue and growth opportunities, WN has decided to introduce complex to take advantage of the growth. As the complexity increases the service will decrease commensurately.

The staff knowledge is an inch wide and mile deep. They are very knowledgeable about WN and the day to day procedures, but they cannot help at all with matters outside of WN. For example, tell them your ultimate destination is calgary and your connecting in LAX to WS, don't be surprised by the blank stare u get back. By contrast a UA has basic knowledge about airlines within he star alliance network and can assist in booking another airline.

WN on time factor is helped immensely by their southern USA focus.

Now WN is very good at their niche markets, short haul business plus domestic visiting friends and relatives markets. But canada market is neither of these markets. It remains to be seen how WN will adjust to the Canadian market.

We have a special visitor coming... fin 803, the 3rd 787 for AC is inbound as AC 1151 from YYZ on its first revenue flight after delivery yesterday, landing around noon. Boy, AC's been nice to us with the 787 that's for sure.

Two AC flights from YYZ cancelled this morning so maybe that's why.

I disagree, cargo pays the bills on quite a few Trans Atlantic and Trans pac flights.
AC33/34 aren't being upgauged from a 77L to a 77W because of high pax loads in October, it's for the higher cargo capacity.
Healthy sales in the J cabin are the other rev generator.
Y cabin sales are "gravy" on these flts.

That can be agreed on to a certain extent as today's YYC-LHR 77W is flying with 203 pax out of the 349 seats.

Most airlines do depend on cargo to generate additional revenue.

Good looking bird. And arguably the cleanest plane I have ever seen. Looking forward to its return and hopefully one day soon getting on board.

I've never had a bad experience on Southwest. I stand by my statement. I couldn't care less about diva crap like business class, lounges or rewards programs. The second best airline is Alaska. AC is the absolute worst, mostly because of bitchy staff.

If I were a betting man, I'd say Doug's last name is Ford. Same political stripes, that's for sure!

As per the article they'd like 4 aircraft by Fall 2015 to operate the Alberta-Hawaii flights. So I THINK that would rule out the 787. Any thoughts?
The wish list - A 380
Woud that look good with Westjet colors - or what?!?!?!?

With so many people in Calgary that go to Nashville, and Southwest goes there - they could get direct service - Calgary - Nashville and Rtn. Awesome for those that do this.

Can't wait to see it flying... And I don't think they are new jets, just "new to Westjet" jets. As boeing no longer produces them correct? Wonder if they would overhaul older A/C 767-333?

Umm Alberta / Calgary = Country music fans. Nashville (one of the best places for country music)

Makes a lot of sense to me!

Sometimes I do get a good laugh from some comments....

According to CANSIM data Nashville to/from all of Canada had about 83,000 total O&D traffic for 2012. About 113 pax per day travelling from Canada to Nashville.

I think this number alone would indicate not that many people would be travelling from Calgary (or anywhere else in Canada) to Nashville.
