I have often tried to make a single point, rather unsuccessfully, that the point of building condos is not that of the condo itself necessarily, but the greater point is that condos are of little benefit to most people unless they are helping to create a higher density neighbourhood. Living in a condo in the suburbs almost defeats its purpose. Anytime you build anything, the important question is - "is this making the neighbourhood better?".

I wonder what they will do with the actual old building? hmmmm maybe offices? IDK it' still a huge building. I doubt they will destroy it, maybe tear down part of it IDK...

Also, everyone will just still call it the Waterford if it's on the same location lol even with a new name to try to shed the stigma... oh well

Waterford Hospital replacement to be built at same location

Well it's good that they are actually replacing it, and not just throwing all the patients out on the street. It's a heritage building though isn't it? It would be nice to keep and refurbish the oldest parts though, the ones with the ghosts in them. Vancouver General is an example of other hospitals restoring some of their oldest buildings now instead of tearing them down.

I'd like the old hospital to be refurbished and used for something else, some of the buildings at the Waterford are beautiful. I understand that there are a lot of asbestos issues there that'll need to be taken care of, but I think the benefit may definitely outweigh the cost on this one.

maybe they'll tear down some and refurbish other parts and turn it into a corporate campus like lillydale.

Time for a Friday afternoon rant…my topic today is the latest development in Quidi Vidi Village.

I see from the Telegram article that some residents are once again upset with a proposal for 5 units (two duplexes and a single home) for Quidi Vidi Road, and for once, I can’t blame them. It is a quick infill with zero imagination. (The background information is on the City’s site http://www.stjohns.ca/sites/default/file...-48B%20Quidi%20Vidi%20Village%20Road.pdf )

I don’t object to the fact that the developer wants to develop an otherwise empty property (check out Google street view, anything would be an improvement) I think more infill would be appropriate, what I object to is the totally bland nature of the homes.
These are more suited to, dare I say, Kenmount Terrace, than they are to QVV. They will stick out like sore thumbs, or more likely, like sore middle fingers. They no more suit the village than the Taj Mahal does.

This is another reason we need some kind of “design review” committee or standards.
Allowing these five units to proceed at this location is the thin edge of the wedge. Think about the hoops the owners of Mallard Cottage, a few hundred feet down the road, had to go through compared to this proposed development.

that would be fantastic, good spot too, it will become the centre of the region when Galway is underway and there are many amenities in the area along with the highway which goes directly into DT. I say GO FOR IT!

Mt. Pearl would then likely have the tallest building. That would be quite a surprise but it could happen eventually; it would even be quite logical, since it's happening in suburban Canada as suburban cities often have less restrictive policies and no heritage regulations to deal with. Mt. Pearl has nowhere to go but up anyway. I reposted this in the rumours thread.

It's a Quebec court. I don't believe Quebec officially accepts the court decision in 1927 that awarded that portion of Labrador to us. Maps produced in Quebec do not identify Labrador as being separate from Quebec, at least.

So, for them, it's theirs.

And, in this federation, they win.

This has been in the works for years now. I was working with an engineering company a few years back that was doing some geotechnical work. I believe it was Holiday Inn and it would be on the site of the current baseball field.

Are you missing a decimal pt - as in a 2.0 story hotel? Why would Mt. Pearl need that many rooms?

Drove past Waterford Valley High. That thing is a beast. Was with a friend from Ottawa. I said, "Around the corner is the new high school they're building."

He looked, gasped, and joked, "Wow, so just a little one then..."

The student population (900 students) is about 50% larger than Bishops, so I would suppose it's the largest school in St. John's.

It's nice to have a new school of course, but too bad the design is so hideous and stuck in the fifties/sixties, in a bad way.
