Molson Brewery site redevelopment to break ground in Edmonton Wednesday

The controversial redevelopment of the former Molson Brewery site will break ground Wednesday, with the developer hoping to win people over as it’s built out.

Ralph Huzinga, with First Capital Reality, said the new LEED silver development will bring a lot to the city.

“This is a project that once it’s built it will be appreciated more than it is on a site plan,” he said.

Huzinga said changes since the approval have moved more of the parking underground and tweaked building designs.

He said he believes most of the resistance was from the Oliver Community League board.

“The resistance we experienced, I’m not convinced, was necessarily indicative of the broader Oliver community,” he said.

Jarrett Campbell, president of the Oliver Community League, said the development is still wrong for the area.

“Fundamentally, it’s the same development and we have the same concerns we have always had,” he said.

Campbell said he believes something better could have been developed on the site, but hopes denser, more pedestrian-oriented development is the future.

“We should take the Molson development and see it as a missed opportunity, but also a learning opportunity,” he said.

Bridge-light team glows with pride over project

The light show is a go.

On Canada Day, Edmontonians will be able to see the LED lights on the High Level Bridge officially lit up for the first time.

The project was funded by about $2.5 million in community donations. Much of that came from $25 donations from individuals, so that they could name lights after loved ones.

Some of the people involved in the project spoke Tuesday. These interviews have been edited and condensed...

Pipeline would bring 900,000 barrels a day to region

A new bitumen pipeline, twice the size of the Northern Gateway to the West Coast, could be under construction this fall to bring 900,000 barrels a day into the Edmonton area, TransCanada Pipelines told a regulatory hearing Tuesday.

The Alberta Energy Regulator is holding the hearing - its first into a pipeline project - after the National Energy Board turned down a request to have the federal regulator involved.

The $3-billion Grand Rapids project, which includes a second pipe for diluent to dilute the bitumen and three large storage-tank farms, is being built to accommodate expected growth in bitumen production, says the company...

Rundle Heights replacement school unanimously approved

Public school trustees approved a plan Tuesday to close three aging schools in northeast Edmonton and build a new school for those students in the Rundle Heights neighbourhood.

In a unanimous vote, trustees decided to build the K-9 school for 650 students beside Rundle Elementary School, at 11005 34th St.

When the replacement school opens in September 2016, three schools will close: Rundle School, with 156 students; R.J. Scott Elementary School, with 114 students; and Lawton Junior High School, with 158 students...

So what will be final Molson site development consist of???



I love this, just not all the parking...the middle surface parking should be replaced with more buildings. Is that red acrylic stucco, or red brick??? I hope brick!!!

If they had simply orientated businesses to the street instead of inward, properly incorporated the Molson building with a wicked new annex, and included some residential in phase 1 it would have been a much better project.

It is most definitely NOT Oliver Square phase 3, but is a missed opportunity in some ways.

Realistically? Probably something like this:





Their rendering shows what their zoning COULD build them, not what their current or even medium term intent is. My guess is they sell off their RA9 parcel to the north, and they build zero of the office above the retail (aside from in the reconstructed brewery). All access will face the internal parking lots.

Interesting comment.

How would the applicant know? They didn't do any consultation. The consultation wasn't even done by the City, it was done by OCL. The workshop they put on was fantastic and included anyone from the broader community that wanted to be there.

So what they're really saying is "We don't like consultation because it shows flaws in our application". The comment also doesn't address the formal position of the OCL board and they small, small changes they requested.

Yes, there are many wonderful examples of historic buildings with modern glass additions; the Molson building would indeed be a wondrous thing with an addition!!!
