The June28 event I recall mentioned 1400hr landing and then almost immediately a departure. Speculation or my detective and airline ops thinking leads me to believe it may be a visitor who might be in the middle of an existing flight but perhaps making a intentional detour to leave some serious skidmarks on that runway.
I suppose it is of little cost to add +/-1hr to an existing flight time. Probably the most effective way to show off even if it is brief.
What I would really like would be multiple super heavies doing a touch and go/stop and go to gang bang that runway on the opening day. Wow, would I pay to see that!
What about watching a BH 125 doing a touch and go on a 3200 ft. runway @ YBW back in July of 1975, on a beautiful warm July morning.
Watching this from the control tower - when I was up there visiting with the controllers that morning - as I was waiting for the flying club to open.
The one controller said to me - as the plane was climbing out from the T & G: "That ought to wake up the college." It was really loud on climb out.
PS: the college was the North American Air Training College and it was, if my memory serves me correctly, thru what was then - Mount Royal College.

Man, I'm really starting to look forward to the opening of the parallel. Talk about a breeze, compared with what we've been doing with crossing runways for the last generation... So simple, smoothe by comparison. Less talking, fewer critical speed adjustments. There'll no doubt be growing pains in the early going but pilots will come to appreciate it, too. Personally, I can't wait for tower to say "unrestricted" (when there's no departures to go) on a nice VFR day so we can stack them up on both runways with visual approaches...! You spotters will enjoy and benefit from it, too.

Can WS do their short gate onto 17L with somebody on a visual for 17R?

AFAIK it should be good as long is one is visual. But I don't think the RNAV Y approaches aren't out for the new runway.

I'd love to be able to say unrestricted for arrivals! A single DDR would make that happen for 16 hours a day.

Can you recommend a good spotting location for the new runway?

Just don't do it from my vantage point, 275 km's away.

Sure it would. I see it more like this:

step 1 - load one into chamber
step 2 - aim at foot
step 3 - pull trigger

Interesting times ahead.....

I will be joining all the spotters there on Saturday, hopefully the wind swings and we can get ops going both ways, the guys down there who are actual photographers already have some places in mind but it's gonna be a fun afternoon for sure.

Well somewhere near the threshold, basically... north of Country Hills Blvd around 36 St. Off the east side of Barlow up near the threshold of 17L, train station parking lot could work for 35R arrivals, none of these are sure bets until there's an actually an airplane on the runway.

The flyover ramp from EB McKnight to NB Metis would be a great place to watch planes land, if there were a place to stop.

I hope no idiot tries to stop on there. The Marriott parking lot is potentially good. We'll have to see come Saturday.

Sounds like the Calgary terminal guys have been doing a lot of simulation and fine tuning so they're ready to roll.

I especially like the pics of the RJ making the right turn out, "staying east of 35L/17R at all times". Must be kinda freaky from way up there in your perch as he would make most of those very close to the tower.

Those pics don't do it justice, it looks very close when it makes a hard turn towards the tower!

Anyone has any update on first plane to land on June 28th on new runway ? It is hard to believe a 16hr regular Superjumbo flight of a Middle Eastern carrier will do a touch and go just to open a new runway.

I've heard a new plausible scenario, and the more I think of it, the more it makes sense to me. That said, I don't want to get in trouble and divulge it here. Again, I'm not at all certain that's the plan.

I thought the Airport Authority was going to build a spotting area beside the new runway? Maybe that idea was scrapped or I misheard?

I fly out on the 27th! Gah, so close to using it on opening day! At least my return flight should land on it, though not until the 20th...

So something is going on for sure; a twitter feed says YYC sent a media advisory today giving a time and location to meet media and they will be bussed to an unobstructed viewing area. (BTW there is no timetable change for **215 on June 28th)
