I just happened to be working tower at the time and the wind made the tour a non-issue. Very easy!

Thanks for plugging these for me man! I was going to do that myself but looks like you were right on it first thing this morning.
The whole experience was pretty damn awesome, and for a special occasion such as this I was very fortunate enough to catch all this from a unique vantage point that alot of people including air crews won't be able to do.

I swear that must of been nick talking to our choppa during this exercise, now I will remember that voice next time I get my scanner running.
Lets see what June 28 at 1400hrs will bring for us..

Lots of rumours swirling around that the first aircraft to land on the new runway will be from the Middle East...

Of course if any airline could spare a "Super" and get some publicity out of it about rights into Canada it is you know who.

Also fantastic pictures of the new runway/terminal... I can't get over how big YYC looks now..

So what exactly is the benefit of the longer runway? We already took the 225 on the current one. Does the new one allow takeoffs with larger fuel load?

No greater benefit, really. The current one, dimensionally speaking, was big enough for anything flying. What they did do, however, was tailor it to be CATIII(a) capable from the beginning. This will virtually permit auto land capability in near WOXOF (meaning beyond shitty) conditions. The extra 1325' is nice and all, but no airplanes currently need anywhere close to that length. Part of me thinks it'll be just another excuse for airlines to reduce their thrust even more on takeoff, therefore taking it nice and slow and almost causing an overshoot with the arrival on final....

The extra 1325' is for if Air France starts serving YYC...

Seriously though, that extra length may help out on those high density altitude days for payloads and de-rated thrust takeoffs.

Nice pics, Bo. I like your flight plan diagram. Lol. Nice of the tower to allow you to do that. They could use the practice of having photo flights, prepare them for the eventuality of having their airspace back after an almost 20 year hiatus...

Anyone know what KL678 is doing parked at A23 today? Also, looks like an abnormally high # of WS tails over on this side of the terminal for this time of day (2 parked and 1 waiting).

Edit: YYC had a power bump this afternoon - must have had to do with that.

I saw that flying "over" the core while driving home from work... is this a normal occurrence?

Haha yeah that's why I took some pot shots of the tower cab on the way back to base. Couldn't make out any figures behind the glass as I maxed out my zoom for my lens.

The June28 event I recall mentioned 1400hr landing and then almost immediately a departure. Speculation or my detective and airline ops thinking leads me to believe it may be a visitor who might be in the middle of an existing flight but perhaps making a intentional detour to leave some serious skidmarks on that runway.
I suppose it is of little cost to add +/-1hr to an existing flight time. Probably the most effective way to show off even if it is brief.
What I would really like would be multiple super heavies doing a touch and go/stop and go to gang bang that runway on the opening day. Wow, would I pay to see that!

Haha. They should have stuck to running arrivals on one runway and departures on the other.
