I thought so. Its the one where the new developer is supposed to be 'refreshing' the design. I am hoping the new design will be close to the ones I posted up above. I think it will be an awesome addition to the DT skyline.

BTW, Mojeda, great photos.........you all manage to come up with different shots/angles of DT bldgs. Its great. Thanks.

Don't forget the liquor store on the east end and the pharmacy on the west end. All of these are part of the recent history of Grand Central and don't appear to be going anywhere fast. What we have is now a pretty mixed Grand Central: several vendors who sell unique items at a surprisingly great price and several vendors who sell unique "artisanal" items at a more upscale, but not prohibitively expensive, price.
Yeah, right now Grand Central Market has a good mix, but how long until the mix is pushed too far into the gentrification side? I bet within five years Grand Central Market will be 95% upscale vendors, and I'm not particularly happy about that.

As a follow-up to the newly green fenced lot on 9th and Hope.....there is no more public parking anymore. The lot is closed off for auto entrances and the parking rate signs have been removed.

Speaking of parking, it's alive and well on Broadway across from the Ace. What's taking do long with the Palmer project? I thought it was imminent?

If there is one thing I know to be true when in comes to new buildings (especially in Los Angeles) is that they never break ground when they say they will.

The Sprawling, Booming LA Tech Scene Is Having a Moment

Dormant and largely vacant for years, the city’s Downtown neighborhood has recently become the hub for e-commerce companies, largely due to its very low rent. In Venice to the south, 16.8 miles away (or an hour and 26 minutes by bus), rent is about $15-$17 per square foot. Downtown, it’s closer to $1.30 a square foot, which is still about twice what it was a year ago.

I figured Palmer would be an exception because he has built so many projects in Downtown, with one under construction as is. When I talked with the parking attendant yesterday he said they haven't heard any news of moving. We still have yet to see the demolition of the buildings over on Olympic so who knows.

On the Palmer thing, I think I read that a cell phone tower had to be relocated?

Part of the problem is that a lot of what's gone in so far isn't just cleaned up versions of what was there before. Instead, it's the most overly priced coffee in DTLA (which tastes awful by the way) where they really aren't 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 with you when they call something a size "small" and a breakfast nook with a douchey name like Eggslut. GCM bypassed normal/middle-class and dove straight into eyeroll.

Gonna seriously disagree about G&B's coffee, and in any case you'd need to be more specific since they offer many different types and brands of coffee. It isn't cheap though. And I won't be the only one to disagree, the NYT declared their iced latte the best in the country. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/11/dining/the-best-iced-latte-in-america.html?_r=0

And honestly, if you want normal just go to Starbucks, there's one on every corner.

the article on the tech industry in LA & the link to the NYT article on the coffee shop in GCM are very interesting. I appreciate this thread when it gives a better sense of what's going on in dt by providing info or pics that I otherwise wouldn't come across on my own.

the mystery of what's going on with the parking lot on 9th St between Hill & olive continues, & mojeda's pic of it adds to the mystery. I browsed through a list of all the projs that are supposed to break ground around now, & the closest I can come up with is another apt bldg proposed for the SW corner of Olympic & Olive, right next door to another apt proj that started construction about 2 months ago. But nothing regarding 9th/hill/olive.

Is the parking lot being sealed off as a staging area for some other nearby devlpt? If so, does the owner feel that requires the site be surrounded by green fencing? Is that to partially block view of equipment & material to help prevent theft or vandalism?

very ironic too when a site a few blocks away, where the palmer apt bldg on broadway is supposed to go up & which everyone expected would be underway several wks ago, remains untouched. Even more so since Palmer has a relatively fast track record of starting & completing his devlpt. Maybe work on his Davinci apt bldg on Temple st next to the Harbor fwy & all the other projs now underway in dtla are slowing down the ability of devlprs like him to get contractors & workers?

When dtladenizen reports that new stores like zara aren't performing up to snuff....due in part to dtla's 24/7 population still not being large as it needs to be....still not as crowded as what's found in thriving downtowns elsewhere....& the hood not exactly having millions of women shoppers on any given day carrying plenty of credit cards....I'm not too worried about grand central mkt eventually becoming overly gentrified, at least not for several more yrs, if even then.

I admit that when I see images like what's shown in this vid, I become almost as anxious as those forumers who are very unhappy when new devlpt isn't taller. the half way point of this vid shot very recently does contain the clearest views of dt as seen from the south. the AT&T bldg still looks rather lonely way off to the east side of dt, although it's not as bad as it was before the evo, luma & elleven towers were built....but they're still kind of short compared with the really tall bldgs to the west.

I was browsing around Kinokuniya in Little Tokyo today, and I came across a familiar view on the cover of a new issue of the Japanese lifestyle magazine Pen.

Photo from Rakuten Books:

The whole issue is basically dedicated in equal parts to Los Angeles and San Francisco, with profiles of various cool shops and restaurants in both regions. What I found pretty neat is that the LA section was focused nearly entirely on Downtown (mostly Historic Core and Arts District) and our newest darling Highland Park. If they'd done an issue like this two years ago, there's no doubt that it would've stuck to the Westside, so I think it's a nice sign of the way things are heading around Downtown and Central LA.

Tiny item on a slow news day, but they were working on the Alexandria annex today. Or at least the security gate was up and there were a few workers milling around. I haven't seen anything going on in there for maybe 7-8 months.

Nice! The tallest tower reminds me a little bit of Richard Rogers' 175 Greenwich Street in NYC. Just a little.

This third iteration is the best design yet. Let's get started!

I just wish they would've demo'd those parking structures on the other side of Francisco. Metropolis seems so far out from the cluster. With those parking structures out of the way they would unify the skyline together. Maybe someday!
