Completely accurate. If this development happens (either one) it would be an absolute gamechanger for the area. There's a 'mental' separation between the space south of the light rail and the space north of it. Honestly, given the proximity to the new park and the many industrial buildings, I could see something halfway Arts District-esque happening up there.

That sign at 9th and Hope has been up for a while. Several weeks at least, now.

One Santa Fe looks great. I wish they would have gone with stainless or brushed metal window outcroppings, just to break up the monotony of all that white, but that's a very small complaint. This looks pretty damn cool the way it is.

Right; the sign has been there for a while. Its the green construction fence that just went in last night that's new. Unfortunately, that's the part that ws missed in the photo update.

Also a fan. It's going to be great over there and I think this design fits in. I will say though that the view coming over the 1st St bridge is less flattering.

Finally, here is Beelman's Pub, the newest offering from the prolific and expansive ACME Hospitality Group, which also created Sixth Street Tavern, Library Bar, and Spring Street Bar (as well as the awesome re-tool of King Eddy's Saloon).

Debuting June 9, this rendition of a streetside European-style bar might be their best production: a relaxed and contemporary nod to the architectural work of Claude Beelman, the late architect who designed such iconic buildings as the Eastern Columbia building on Broadway in Downtown. As for the drinks, they're in one sense straightforward and unfussy, like one would find on a street in Paris: beers like Czech pilsners and Italian lagers on tap to a slew of reasonably priced wines by the glass.

Well that lot on 9th between grand and olive I believe your talking about, a couple of pages back somebody mentioned talking to a parking attendant on the property who said that the lot was going to be fenced up soon for a tower or 2 towers, one being residential and the other being a mix used tower or something in the 30 story range. I cant remember the specifics but it was 20-30 pages back I think if not further back.

I'm really digging the almost end result of one Santa Fe, since its obviously isn't done yet, I don't care what people say about it, for its location its perfect.

there was a pic of the onni apt tower posted to this thread several days ago...or was that at ssc.com?....snapped from around grand ave, with that parking lot looming in the foreground. That plot of land is one of those huge gaps I tend to forget about or overlook unless I'm actually in dt, looking at it from up close. So its demise as early as around this exact moment in time would be almost too good to be true.

after all, if anything substantial were being planned for that site....& if were so far along in the planning process that the land already was being prepped for it right now...news about such a proj would have come out into the open well before today. However, the 888 south hope tower did seem to kind of sneak up on everyone at the last minute, so I guess anything is possible.

It will be truly amazing if dtla becomes like an urban version of what was going on in the burbs of socal.....around the OC or towns like thousand oaks....several yrs ago, when large housing projs were being built all at the same time, one after the other.

I hope the north side of 9th st between Grand & olive is one instance when currently the plot thickens & the mystery grows, but it all eventually leads to a great ending.

There was this parking lot on 9th between Olive and Grand that was fenced off with some equipment. Anyone have any idea what it is? I don't recall any project for this site. Probably just for the parking structure going on down 9th or for 9th & Olive.

the evolution of the culture & economics of dt is fascinating to behold. I just wish the time frame of the young girl whose grandfather owned a stall at GCM & is given alot of interview time could have been the time frame I was in when I was growing up.

Was Grand Central Market originally all mexican vendors??? like in the beginning?? or did they move in after the whites left for the suburbs??? just curious.

That's a pretty strong video about Grand Central Market. I can't help but feel that there is a huge part of LA history that may be lost with its gentrification. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the positive changes in DTLA, but it almost feels like one day we'll look back at things that once were and they'll be gone. Similar to the State Building that used to be on 1st and Spring or the Atlantic Richfield Plaza. Kind of makes you wish you were alive to see it (if you weren't) and perhaps one day another generation will look back at the Grand Central Market that once was the same way. Not because it was pretty or anything like that. But because of the cultural reference to an era of DTLA.

There are still remnants of the "old" Grand Central Market that are still there and will probably still be there: the Salvadorian place that makes amazing papusas, the seafood place that sells prepared foods and raw fish, the spice vendors, the fruit vendors, and several taco and Chinese food vendors who still do a really bang-up business. Don't forget the liquor store on the east end and the pharmacy on the west end. All of these are part of the recent history of Grand Central and don't appear to be going anywhere fast. What we have is now a pretty mixed Grand Central: several vendors who sell unique items at a surprisingly great price and several vendors who sell unique "artisanal" items at a more upscale, but not prohibitively expensive, price.

It has always changed with the population. In 1917 it catered to the residents of Bunker Hill. The changes today are emblematic of the demographic changes. Let's hope for a good mix in the future.

The best thing right now is to have documentation of how things are at this moment. Here's a blog that tracks the loss of older businesses and buildings in NYC (http://lostnewyorkcity.blogspot.com/), for example. Sad in some ways, as people tend to pine for what was. For me personally, I was appalled when CBGB's closed and became a John Varvatos store. So much of the Village is gone - places that were not just local centers, but that had international influences on music, art, literature. It seems pretty sterile now.

For GCM, I like the mix of businesses right now, it has a foot in both worlds. But the history of DTLA is so different than the Village, which changed over the course of several decades. We're going from mostly dead to mostly renaminated in maybe 15 years, which is lightning speed comparatively. What was the population of DTLA 10 years ago? 5k or something like that? It seems inevitable that new businesses will support the people living closest to them, which is what's happening at GCM.
