City considers demolishing Telus Field

Gordon Kent
Edmonton Journal

Friday, June 06, 2014

Telus Field might need to be altered or even demolished to help make the proposed West Rossdale redevelopment profitable, a consultant's report says.

A 2011 city plan calls for adding almost 2,000 housing units, stores, treelined boulevards, wider sidewalks and lots of public space to the river valley community.

But a report released Thursday said development on cityowned land, which covers about 80 per cent of the area, isn't financially attractive under current zoning.

It suggests adding extra city land, such as Telus Field, to the residential development plan following a detailed evaluation of the park's future and costs...

City could earn $45M from airport development: report

Gordon Kent
Edmonton Journal

Friday, June 06, 2014

The city would earn a $45-million profit over 25 years following the preferred option for developing the old City Centre Airport property, a new report says.

It would use a district energy system and see almost one-fifth of the 217-hectare site set aside for parks irrigated by stormwater, says the report released Thursday.

"This scenario achieves council's vision ... and it optimizes investment in environmental and social sustainability features."

While it would provide family housing, create employment opportunities and enable NAIT expansion, it could take longer to complete if demand drops for lowmedium density homes. Under this plan, the city would make $553 million, mainly from land sales, and spend $508 million on development, affordable housing and other costs...

Bike-lane project to get more public input, education
Focus should remain on core routes: transportation committee

Tyler Dawson
Edmonton Journal

Friday, June 06, 2014

The Edmonton bike lane plan should move forward with more public education and consultation and continue the focus on core routes, the Transportation Committee decided Thursday.

Councillors approved a report from Transportation Services on moving forward with the bike lane plan and passed three motions expanding consultations on the issue.

"These processes give more opportunities for the public to have input on the route location and we haven't done that before," Michelle Chalifoux with Transportation Services told the committee...

Council to start the cycle over again
It's back to the drawing board on bike lanes

David Staples
Edmonton Journal

Friday, June 06, 2014

Two refreshing things happened Thursday at city council's debate on bike lanes. First, there were no lofty, idealistic speeches from councillors about the benefits of bike lanes. Instead, councillors came across as muted, practical, critical, even chastened.

This should come as no surprise given that council's first bike-lane plan cost $11 million and created 63 km of bike lanes that almost nobody uses and almost everybody hates...

No it certainly doesn't. But, still pretty cool

The rock is actually 3 huge stones piled up on eachother, with the top one bored out to plant a tree... 90's nature art. Obviously they are covering them up with sheeting to protect them at the construction site. That's my guess.

Correct. It is also the springtime home of a particular mama goose where she hatches her babies and then promptly pushes them out as soon as they're old enough.

Should elaborate a bit more on speculation that I heard, a selection had been made, but has to go to the board for approval. End of July would be the next board meeting. But by no means is a reliable source.

Will the arena have two tower cranes as well? Or stick with more mobile types?
